Goal of Oak Hill Academy's Internet Access:
To make available to the faculty and students at Oak Hill Academy the vast
potential resources available via the Internet as a research and teaching
tool, while at the same time maintaining the school's overall goals and
objectives.
Objectives of these guidelines:
1. To make both parents and students aware of the significance of the
students' actions regarding their use/misuse of the Internet.
2. To release the school in general and faculty members in particular from
any liability that might arise from a student's use/misuse of the Internet
capabilities available at Oak Hill Academy.
3. To Educate the students regarding both the positive and the negative uses
of the Internet, incorporating into that education the ethics of proper use
of the Internet.
Accounts:
1. Students must receive instruction in the proper use of the Internet before
being allowed access.
2. Use of the Internet will be strictly monitored by the lab instructor and
the classroom teacher.
3. Use of the Internet by students will be for the purpose of improving
research skills, supplementing the resources available to them through the
school library, and enhancing students' knowledge of emerging technology.
4. Oak Hill Academy reserves the right to terminate at any time the access of
any student who does not comply with the guidelines set forth in this
document.
Files:
1. Students must monitor all materials which they themselves receive/send via
the Internet. Specifically, no pornographic materials, no dangerous or
inflammatory materials, no obscene or profane materials, no suggestive
materials or materials with sexual connotations, and/or text encoded
materials that are potentially dangerous to the integrity of the network
shall be allowed.
2. Students are responsible for reporting to the supervising teacher any
questionable materials found/received while their classmates or they are
using the Internet.
3. School officials have the right to monitor and/or remove Internet access
at all times.
4. Any costs incurred because of negligence or malicious use of the Internet
system by a student will be paid for by that student.
Software:
1. Students are responsible for maintaining the integrity of all software
currently installed on the Oak Hill Academy network. Specifically, a student
is never to attempt to access software not available to him\her.
2. Any incident of attempted or successful computer "hacking", whether it be
via the Internet, in the OHA business records, student records, or any other
software, will be dealt with severely and may result in a student's expulsion
because of the potentially criminal nature of such offenses. Students must
understand that any action of this nature in not simply childish fun-- it can
have severe repercussions in the real world, as it is a criminal offense.
3. Students have the responsibility of keeping copyrighted software of any
kind (particularly games) from entering the school via the Internet or home.
Instructional Information:
Students must always be in compliance with ethical, moral, and legal
standards of behavior when using the internet. These standards include, but
are not limited to, such things as never violating another person's right of
privacy by accessing that person's files and never using the network for
financial gain. Prior to receiving permission to use the internet, all
students will be given the following information.
1. Use of the Internet is done on the school's equipment and must be operated
with this premise in mind.
2. Not everything a student sees or hears on the Internet is necesarily true.
3. Students shall keep personal information (i.e. phone numbers, addresses,
etc.) private and off the Internet.
4. Students shall be brief and to the point, thinking carefully before typing
any message.
5. Students shall not advertise nor send junk mail using the Internet.
6. No service file or account shall ever be accessed illegally
7. When using a listserve, students should keep in mind the purpose of that
list and not stray from the point.
8. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
9. Copyright law shall be adhered to in all cases.
10. Students should avoid using all CAPS in e-mail messages as this is
considered shouting at the receiver of the message.
11. Students must keep in mind that any information sent or received over the
Internet is public information.
