Each child is assigned a reading level at the beginning of the year based on
the results of his/her STAR Test, a reading level assessment test or on their
past year's color dot. After being assigned a color (reading level for
books), they are assigned a points goal. Your student should have a 9-weeks
goal, as well as small three week goals to keep him on track. Please
encourage your student by asking him/her how many points they have. Ask them
how much longer until goal. This will help keep them actively reading for AR
practice.
The color dot system is used to make it easier for your child to find their
level books.
Each color has a different set of requirements detailing how many books they
have to read, how many points the books can have, what kinds of books they
must read, and any Award Winners they may have to try. This exposes them to
many types of books, different series, and ensures that they read some of
the longer books in the upper levels.
Below is an detail of reading levels and books:
under 1.0 yellow
1.0-1.5 yellow star
1.6-2.0 green
2.1-2.5 blue
2.6-3.0 red
3.1-3.5 pink
3.6-4.0 white
4.1-4.5 orange
4.6-5.0 light blue
5.1-5.5 purple
5.6-6.0 light green
6.1-7.0 brown
7.1-9.0 black
over9.0 red star
If you look for books at your local library, you will need to look at the
book level because their color system may be different.
***Once a student is reading two color dot grade levels above their
actual grade level, it is the student's option to not go on to the next color
until the next year.
