The MATH TEAM is a group of highly motivated 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who enjoy mathematics
and are interested in learning understandings, skills, and content beyond the usual classroom
curriculum in number theory, geometry, algebra, and arithmetic. This learning takes place during
regular practices held after school. To showcase their efforts, the TEAM has 5 opportunities to
compete against other schools at regional meets. RMS is a member of the Intermediate Math League
of Eastern Massachusetts (IMLEM) along with 60 or more other schools. While students and schools
vie for top rankings, the meets are friendly and fun.
When are practices?
Practices are on Thursdays at 2:15 - 3:00 from Sept. 24, 2009 through March 25, 2010 except for
days that are "meet days" - also on Thursday, and school vacation and half days. Sign-ups will be
held during the week of Sept.21, 2009. There will be a sheet to sign posted on the door of room E-
129.*
Where are practices?
Practice is held in Mrs. O'Leary's room which is E-129.
When and where are the five meets?
Meet #1: Oct.29, 2009 at Manchester/Essex Middle School
Meet #2: Dec. 3: Peabody Higgins Middle School
Meet #3: Jan. 14: Shore Country Day School - Beverly
Meet #4: Feb. 25: Briscoe Middle School - Beverly
Meet #5: April 1: HOME at Rockport
NOTE: Snow dates are always 1 week later than the scheduled meet.
How do we get to the meets?
We take a school bus to four AWAY meets. You will need to bring in a signed permission slip to
travel with the team to the meets. The bus gets back to Rockport about 5:50. Students usually call
home to arrange for pick-up as the bus approaches Gloucester.
Do friends and family watch the meets?
While parents are welcome at the meet, they cannot see their child perform. It is a "paper and
pencil"
competition and monitored in quiet classroom settings. Parents can, upon permission from an
advisor, enter the cafeteria where teams eat, socialize, and view the scores category by category
when they are not in testing rooms.
Please note: If a child is to leave a meet with a parent, they
must give me (Mrs. O'Leary) a note about that arrangement during the school day and the parent
must see me at the meet before leaving with their child. We will NEED PARENTS at our home
meet
(April 1: 3:00 to 5:30) to help with the food, cafe monitoring and testing room proctoring. Please
email me if you are able to help out.
Is there an official IMLEM website?
Yes. It is http://www.imlem.org/index.htm
* NOTE: There are NO tryouts. Everyone is welcome to be on the MATH TEAM. The TEAM is always
accepting new members. If something prevents you from joining in the Fall, join after that activity
stops. It is nice to let me know this in advance so I can instruct you to be in the team picture which
is
taken in the Fall.
