Our Computer Lab

Psst.....Students - Check out the insides of a computer!  http://members.aol.com/wbox/wboxmenu.htm

 Welcome to the Computer Lab!

Our beautiful and spacious computer lab consists of 34 Dell computers networked to a WinXP server to provide a safe, secure and reliable learning environment for all our students. Each student has access to Microsoft Office Word, Powerpoint and Excel, Photoshop, Type to Learn, Inspiration and a variety of educational learning programs appropriate to their grade level and curriculum. Every student has an assigned seat and a private student folder for saving their work on the network. The internet is filtered using an approved web-based system and protected by McAfee.

Students spend the first 6 weeks of school learning to type. . Grades K-3 loved working through a new program, Kid Keys, learning how to use a mouse and whereabouts of each letter on the keyboard. The upper grades use Type to Learn, our keyboarding instruction program. Learning to type without looking at their fingers is such a challenge, but as we all know, keyboarding is essential. Depending upon their skills and accuracy, the program advances them through the lessons, providing instant positive feedback. Their goal is 20 words per minute, without looking at their fingers.

If you'd like to order Type to Learn, please send me a note with the student's name, class and a check for $14.95 made out to Scholastic. Write my name, Mrs. Durfee, on the envelope and have it sent to the office.

The 7th and 8th graders use the computer lab to complete their writing, social studies or literature assignments. By the end of 8th grade, they will be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint. They will be able to brainstorm and web ideas using Inspiration, a terrific program that helps writers organize their thoughts.

Practice keyboarding and have a great year!!
