If my child misses a day of school, how do I make sure the absence is excused?

Send a note to the teacher when your child returns to school that includes
the date(s) missed and the reason for their absence. The teacher will then
determine if the absence is legally excusable. If your child went to the
doctor, please send an excuse note from the doctor's office to school with
your child.

Does the school social worker work for the Department of Social Services?

No, although I collaborate with and make referrals to DSS, I do not work for
the Department of Social Services. I am a New Hanover County School employee
and am lucky enough to be working full-time at Anderson Elementary.
