Spelling and Vocabulary Lists

Mrs. McIntyre�s Weekly Spelling Activities

Monday night (no contract activity required)
     1.  Complete a word sort.  
     2.  Copy these words onto a piece of notebook paper.  
Tuesday night
     1.  Complete one of the activities below
     2.  Do a speed sort and record on your newsletter the number of 
         seconds it took you to successfully sort your words.
Wednesday night
	1.  Complete 10 sentences using 10 of your spelling words.  
Each sentence should be at least 8 words in length.
	2.  Do a blind word sort (someone should call out your 
          words � you should tell them the category and then put
          the word in that category) 
Thursday night
	1.  Take a pretest and have an adult sign the test
	2.  Write any words spelled incorrectly 5 times each

On days that contract is written on your newsletter, please choose 
an activity listed below to complete for homework. Please include 
the number of the activity you choose on your paper. All of your 
spelling activities will be collected Friday morning as a graded 
spelling assignment. Your grade will be based on the following scale:
4 activities completed = A		on four day weeks
3 activities completed = B		3 Activities completed = A
2 activities completed = C		2 Activities completed = B/C 
1 activity completed = D		1 Activity completed = D

1)	Write the words 3 times each.
2)	Write the words in alphabetical order or reverse 
        alphabetical order
3)	Use each word in a sentence.
4)	Write your words using a different color for the vowels. 
5)	Hold two different colored markers, crayons, or pens in your 
        hand. Write the words in your best handwriting.
6)	Create a word search (puzzlemaker.com) then circle your 
        words.
7)	Design a bookmark on drawing or construction paper. Write 
        your list on the bookmark.
8)	Write the alphabet on a piece of paper. Under the 
        letter �A,� write $1.00. Under �B,� write $2.00, and so 
        on.  Total the dollar amount of each of your words.
9)	Cut letters out from magazines and newspapers and glue them 
        on paper to spell your words.
10)	Sort the words according to their parts of speech. 
11)	Draw a picture to go with each word.
12)	Write each word and number of letters in each word.  Put 
        them in order from shortest to longest.
13)	 Write your list as one long word using different colors for 
        each word.
14)	Type the words on the computer five times each.  Use a 
        different font for each word.
15)	Write your words forwards, then backwards.
16)	Write a short story using all of your words.

POETRY TERMS
poet: author or writer of a poem
speaker: A person who reads the poem out loud
stanza: A group of lines that make up a paragraph in a poem
line: A group of words on a poem on a line
poetry: A text with stanzas, lines, and sometimes rhyming words
lyric poetry� rhyming poems that don�t tell a story
narrative poetry� telling stories in rhyme
mood- The way the poem  makes you feel
subtitles: the second title of an article.
italics: Words that are written with slanting letters
