What is the Reading Wheel?

The Reading Wheel is designed to help your child develop higher order thinking
skills when reading books. This wheel contains books of different genres -
fiction, nonfiction, poetry, etc. Once your child reads a book from one of
the genres on the reading wheel, s/he must complete a reading contract for
that book to earn credit. The reading wheel is not factored into your child's
reading grade.

How is my child assessed in second grade?

Your child will be assessed informally in both reading and math on a daily
basis. This is done through classwork and small group instruction. In
addition to these informal assessments, students will be given county-wide
assessments each nine weeks in both reading and math.

How will I be informed of my child's progress?

Student work folders will be sent home each week. Look for them to come home
on Thursdays. In this folder will be a weekly comment from the teacher. I
encourage you to go over this work folder with your child each week. I am
also happy to discuss your child's progress with you at any time. We can
schedule a conference or talk by phone.
