The UNCG iSchool Fall 2009 registration window opens on April 15. Please
consult the iSchool website for registration instructions.

Please note the following important items:

1. German 101 and 102 -- Due to limited seat availability, students will be
required to register for BOTH courses. If students cannot commit to BOTH
semesters, they will not be allowed to register. We MUST guarantee a spring
102 seat for all students enrolled in fall 101! Our office will monitor this
closely and contact the high school to confirm each registration.

Additionally, note that students are required to speak in this course.

2. BCN 225 (Masterpieces of Cinema) -- This department has changed its name
to "Media Studies" so the course prefix is changed immediately to MST. The
NCDPI course code remains the same.

Additionally, remember that students will have to view about 14 movies for
this course. Students are responsible for obtaining copies of these through
rental, purchase, or other means.

NHCS OFFERS SUMMER ACCELERATION ACADEMY

This summer, New Hanover County Schools will offer a new academic program,
the Summer Acceleration Academy. The Summer Academy will provide eligible
high school students with the opportunity to take Honors courses in the
following subject areas:

•	Algebra II
•	Chemistry I
•	Civics and Economics
•	English III.

Students who complete the courses will receive the full high school credits
associated with each course and take the End of Course (EOC) examinations at
the end of the session. NHCS will send the students’ transcripts to their
home districts after completion of the courses.

“The Summer Acceleration Academy provides a great opportunity for students
who want to advance over the summer,” said Mrs. Emma H. Jackson, NHCS
Executive Director of Instructional Services. “The program is open to any
high school student who meets the academic requirements to take the courses,
not just students residing in New Hanover County,” she added.

The summer program will be conducted over a six-week period, from June 19,
2009 through July 31, 2009. Classes will be held Monday through Friday, from
8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., at John T. Hoggard High School, 4305 Shipyard Boulevard,
Wilmington, NC. The cost to participate in the program is $500 per course.

Applications to the program must be postmarked by June 1, 2009. Checks should
be made payable to New Hanover County Schools. Return completed applications
to:

Mrs. Emma Jackson
Executive Director of Instructional Services
6410 Carolina Beach Road
Wilmington, North Carolina 28412

Applications and course descriptions are available at:
http://www.nhcs.net/news/SummerAccAcademy2009.htm

For questions or additional information, please contact Mrs. Jackson at (910)
254-4111 or ejackson@nhcs.net.

To determine eligibility for enrollment into the summer acceleration courses,
transcripts will be reviewed after the close of the 2008-2009 school year.
As all school districts in North Carolina use the NC WISE student information
system, students’ final grade and End of Course scores will be electronically
submitted for inclusion on each student’s transcript. If for any reason a
student is not eligible for enrollment or the course has reached maximum
capacity, any program registration fees that have been submitted will be
returned.

CLARIFICATION AND DISTINCTION BETWEEN SCHOLARSHIPS: There are two
scholarships with very similar names that often raise questions from students
and parents. The SEANC Scholarship and the SECU "People Helping People"
Scholarship.
**SEANC is State Employees Association of North Carolina. These scholarships
are worth between $500 to $1,000 and are based on financial need and/or
merit. Students must have a parent as a member of this organization in order
to qualify. The application is 24 pages long. It can be downloaded from
www.seanc.org or an electronic application can be submitted online. Deadline
is April 15.
**The SECU "People Helping People" Scholarship is sponsored by the State
Employee's Credit Union. Recipients do not have to be a member of SECU,
however preference is given to employees of the state for awards. ONE
scholarship worth $10,000 (over 4 years/$1250 per semester) is awarded from
each high school. This scholarship is based on evidence of leadership,
character, integrity and community service (not academic merit or financial
need). Students may submit a resume and statement of qualifications (info.
sheet in Scholarships file Career Services office) to Mrs. Wilson (counselor)
by April 14th. The AHS scholarship committee will then determine the
recipient from among those who have applied.

SCHOLARSHIP SCAM: DO NOT EVER PAY A COMPANY TO HELP YOU FIND FINANCIAL AID
AND/OR SCHOLARSHIPS. There are many free websites available as well as
scholarships listed on this site for students to find assistance with paying
for college. The Financial Aid Offices of ANY college or university can
assist you with financial aid. NEVER pay a company to help you with
scholarship searches. NO company can guarantee that you will have the
qualifications to RECEIVE a scholarship. See your school counselor if you
have any questions about solicitations you might receive about scholarship
companies.

JUNIORS:

Ayn Rand Essay Contest (Grades 11 & 12): $50 - $10,000. Essay based on Ayn
Rand's novel THE FOUNTAINHEAD. www.aynrand.org/contests. May 20 deadline.

There will be an SAT Prep class taught by AHS teachers after school. A new
section begins 5 weeks prior to each SAT. $175 for 5 sessions of either Math
or English; $375 for both Math and English. If students sign up their own
group, the price drops to $125 for either a Math or English group. See Mr.
Christner for details and to sign up. Price includes the cost of the book.

WANT TO PLAY COLLEGE SPORTS? KNOW YOUR CORE COURSE GPA. New website for
students to calculate athletic/academic eligibility. www.CoreCourseGPA.com.

Seniors: Have a computer but no Internet at home? We have a disk with the
East Carolina University Undergraduate Catalog and Application for Admission
in the Career Center. Feel free to borrow it, but please return it when you
are finished as we only have one copy.

Athletic Eligibility: Students must take a minimum of 3 units of credit per
semester in order to be eligible to participate in high schooll athletics.
If you are concerned about how many credits you are taking, see your
counselor. Year-long AP courses do not count as a full unit of credit in the
first semester.

Grades 9-12: If you need someone (teacher, counselor, or someone outside of
school) to write a recommendation for you for any purpose--a scholarship
competition, college admission, etc.--please provide that person with a
resume and give the request to him/her approximately 5 days prior to the due
date. A rushed recommendation will not be as thoroughly thought-out. Many
teachers and counselors have several students applying for the same things
with the same deadlines. These are handled on a first-come basis. You need
to do your part to help the person writing the recommendation to meet the
deadline in a timely manner---not at the last minute.

SAT/ACT SCORES ON TRANSCRIPTS: It is the decision of New Hanover County
Schools that beginning with the 2008-2009 school year, SAT or ACT scores will
not be entered on student transcripts. Colleges will need the official scores
to be sent directly to them from the testing company. Take advantage of the
4 free scores that can be sent at the time of testing. If you choose not to
send scores when they are free, the SAT charges $9.50 per college for each
score report sent, and the ACT charges $9.00 per college for each score
report sent.

Communities in Schools sponsors the E.A.S.Y. (Educational Alternative for
Suspended Youths) program. It is now located at 20 North Fourth Street at the
old Sheriff's Office building. Parents must CALL to make an appointment for
students to participate in this short-term-suspension program. It serves
students on 10 day or less suspension. Students must provide books from the
home school and have assignments to work on during the suspension. Call
Nikki Reid at 343-1901.

CAPE FEAR COMMUNITY COLLEGE OFFERS COURSES FOR COLLEGE CREDIT ON THE ASHLEY
CAMPUS. These courses are offered through a Huskins program and the courses
are often referred to as "Huskins classes". Students must have a qualifying
Accuplacer score (for most courses an 80 in Reading) or qualifying SAT score
(usually 470 Critical Reading, depending on the CFCC course) to be able to
reigster for these courses while in high school. Students may take the
Accuplacer on announced dates at Ashely High or go to CFCC to take the test.
There is no cost for the test. Students will receive both high school and
college credit for the courses. Courses are taught on the Ashley campus
during the regular school day. See Mrs. Bayliss in Room 705 if you are
interested in taking one of these courses.

THE NORTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR'S PAGE PROGRAM: For any high school students 15-
18 years of age. Must be in good academic standing. The page program is for
one week. It runs all year. Pages receive $150 to cover expenses for the
week. For more information and to apply, go to
www.volunteernc.org/code/govpage.htm

SENIORS: At the end of the year, Student Services will need to know what
college you have decided to attend so your final end-of-year transcript can
be sent to that school. You will be asked to fill out a white card with this
information. It also asks you to report all scholarship money you have been
offered at the time of graduation. You will not get your tickets for guests
to attend graduation until this card is turned in to Student Services.

NC State University has a First Year College program for students who are
undecided on a college major. Students will take a year-long course
in "Introduction to University Education" and will work one-on-one with an
advisor to learn about majors and careers. This is NOT a back-door program
for entrance into the university as students who already have decided on a
major will become frustrated with all of the career exploration activities.
For more information about the First Year College program, go online at
www.ncsu.edu/fyc.

UNC-Asheville has a 2+2 program in Engineering. Students may begin the
program for 2 years in Asheville and then may transfer to NC State University
for completion of the program. Contact UNC-Asheville for more information.

Harvard University will now permit students from low-income families to
attend Harvard free--no tuition, no loans. A family earning less than
$60,000/year with an honor student is eligible. Go to Harvard's financial aid
website at www.fao.fas.harvard.edu or call (617)495-1581.

ARE YOU THE CHILD OF AN ALCOHOLIC PARENT? Wilmington has an Alateen program
to help children of alcoholics cope with the problems at home. For more
information and to find out when & where Alateen meetings are being held in
our community, call Linda Kuharcik at 910-458-1795.
