About The Teacher

Joy Butler Clayton joined the faculty at Athens Drive High School in the fall
of 2005. She brought 15 years of choral music experience to her current
position. This year the choral department earned it's 5th Superior rating at
the State Choral Festival under her leadership.

Mrs. Clayton began her education by earning her first degree in Business and
was originally employed by Capital Formation Counselors, an investment
banking firm in Bellair Bluffs, Florida. By her mid-twenties, she realized
her life passion was vocal performance and pursued her degree in music
performance/education.

Highlights of her education and career include her nomination by the college
faculty to "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, voted by peers
as Teacher of the Year at Greenfield School, lead roles as Laurie
in "Oklahoma", mother in "Amahl & The Night Visitor" , Miss Silverpeal in
Mozart's "The Impresario" and the lead in Menotti's "Old Maid & the Thief".
She is also a 20 year member of the professional women's singing
group "Friends". They have performed all over the southeast including the
Greenbrier, St. Simons Island, Governor's Mansion, political rallies and in
various Congressional venues in Washington D.C.

She has been married for 32 years to Reverend Rick Clayton, senior pastor of
Hayes Barton United Methodist Church in Raleigh. They have two children Ryan,
age 28 and Alyson, age 25. She is thrilled to be a part of the Athens Drive
family!
