version)

GRADING
Quarter Grades will be calculated using the following formula:

Test, Project Scores 50%
Lab, Quiz Scores 30%
Homework Scores 20%

Exams are administered at the end of the first and second semesters.
The mid-term exam will cover material from the first and second quarters.
The final exam will cover material from the third and fourth quarters.
Exams count as 20% of the semester average.

STANDARDS AND EXPECTATIONS FOR 2011-2012

1. If we follow the 3 R's we will have a good year. The 3 R's are:
Respect, Reverence, and Responsibility.

2. If you are not in your seat when the tardy bell rings you will receive an
unexcused lateness. If another teacher detains you, get a note before
coming to class.

3. You are responsible for bringing your Biology notebook, and a pen or
pencil to class each day.
You should purchase a three-subject notebook or divide one large notebook
into three sections.
Use a separate section for class notes, homework assignments, and
vocabulary (prefixes and suffixes). If you desire you may use a loose-
leaf notebook and make three separate sections.
Homework may be turned in the day after the due date for one-half
credit.
I make every effort to post homework assignments weekly on the school
homework web-site.
Students are responsible for completing assignments given in class even if
the assignments arent posted on the web-site.

4. If you know you are going to miss class due to a school sponsored activity
(sports, clubs, etc.) you must turn your assignment before you miss
class.
This year the science test day will be on Tuesday. It is your
responsibility to arrange for make-up work. Please make up missed
homework, labs, quizzes, and tests promptly.
See the Student Handbook for Make-up guidelines.

5. Cell Phone Policy : If I see or hear your cell phone, or see you looking
at it during class, you are in violation.
I will follow the policy outlined on page 6 of the Student Handbook.

6. Technology Failure (ie. Internet Down or Printer problems) is not an
excuse for not turning in work on time.

7. A Prefix quiz will be given each week. The purpose of theses quizzes is
to build English and Science vocabulary. These quizzes are cumulative
which means that you must review the previous terms and the new terms each
week. These count 30% of the quarter average.

8. A creative project will be assigned each quarter. Each project counts as
a test grade for the respective quarter. Here are the project due
dates :
1st Quarter = October 25 , 2nd Quarter = December 13 ,
3rd Quarter = March 20 , 4th Quarter = May 8

9. A novel will be read each Semester. The First Semester novel test will be
given on December 20 and the Second Semester novel test will be given on
May 15.

10. An extra credit novel may be read each quarter for a + 10 curve on a test
grade. A specific list of novels will be posted on the
homework web-site.

Here are the extra credit novels for 2012.
If you read the novel and pass a test (10 short questions) you will receive
10 extra credit points on a test.

Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean Auel Mutation by Robin Cook
The Boys From Brazil by Ira Levin Chromosome 6 by Robin Cook
Reason for Hope by Jane Goodall Fatal Cure by Robin Cook

(Note: You may only read one
                                                       "Cook Book)
The Legacy of Luna by Julia Butterfly Hill

Animals---Characteristics, Animal Phyla, Crawfish

Prefixes are included

The exam consists of 150 Multiple Choice (count off .67 each)and 20-30 Short
Answer Questions. The multiple choice will be answered on a bubble sheet so
bring a #2 pencil. The short answers are optional---you may do as many as
you can. For each Short Answer you get right you will receive one bonus
point. There is no penalty for a wrong answer on the Short Answer questions
so it is to your advantage to answer as many as you can and to work for the
entire exam period.
For example, if your score on the multiple choice was 77 and you
answered 14 short answers correctly, your exam grade would be 91 (77 + 14)

What to study ?????
Read the Chapters in the book and review your answers on SA and CA
Even though we didin't do vocabulary for Homework, you may want to
consider writing the definition for the Vocabulary terms for each
Chapter. The act of writing helps you to concentrate.

Class Notes---Consider re-copying them. The act of writing forces
you to concentrate and helps you remember them

Prefixes---I'll put approximately 20 of these in the Multiple Choice

Old Tests---The exam format will be similar to
                      the Chapter test format.

Many of the short answer questions on the exam will be
exactly the same as the short answers from the tests.
I'll include two short answer questions from the novels
Remember the short answers on the exam are extra credit

I AM ASSIGNING AN OPTIONAL EXTRA CREDIT PROJECT
(THIS IS OPTIONAL---NOT REQUIRED)

+ Make a Creative, Colorful, Interesting, and Informative Exam Review Poster

+ Specifics :
             1. Use a standard-sized sheet of poster paper

             2. Use the Front and the Back---review topics from the notes---
                also include GATTACA, Prefixes, Rhino

             3. Make it colorful and creative---draw pictures, have riddles,
                quiz questions, games, etc.

             4. Hopefully this will allow you to review for the exam, earn
some extra credit, and have some fun (maybe !)

             5. This must be done individually---no group efforts

             6. Due Date : Wednesday, May 30

             7. I will give up to +10 points added to a Test grade for
exceptionally well-done posters. The number of extra credit
points you receive will depend on the quality of your poster

                  Prefix quiz # 8 on Friday 03.16.12

Work on your DNA model project (Due Tuesday, March 20)

Work on your Fruit Fly Lab Report (Due Thursday 03.22)
Details :

Guidelines for the Fruit Fly Lab Report :

               THE LAB MUST BE TYPED

               1. Follow OHECK

               2. For the Observation section, Type a 1/3-1/2 page
biography on Mendel (use an outside source) and state
Mendel's Laws of Dominance, Segregation, and
                  Independent Assortment

               3. You already have your Hypothesis.

               4. For The Experiment section, describe the procedure we used
in step or paragraph form. Include the Results in Chart
and Bar Graph form and show the % deviation calculation.
We go over the details of this in class.
Trace or draw free-hand a color sketch of the
Fly life cycle (I will provide you with a color handout)
Sketch and label (in color) a vial containing a fly culture

               5. For the Conclusion section discuss how this lab illustrated
Mendel's 3 Laws. Include a Punnett square and explain how
the Punnett square provides expected ratios in a genetic
cross. Also discuss % deviation. If it is high (over 20%)
discuss some factors that could have caused it to be high.
Discuss any problems with the lab and things that could be
improved. Suggest some future genetic studies using Fruit
                  Flies

               6. Mention Kick It Off Again

Here is some information on the Semester Exam :

EXAM INFORMATION FOR FIRST SEMESTER 2011-2012

CHECK THE SCHOOL WEB-SITE FOR AN EXAM SCHEDULE

Exam format

Chapters Covered = 1-9 + 14 (Use you worksheet packet for Chapters 3-6)

Class Notes are included

Alex The Life Of A Child is included (I'll return your quiz and Test and you
can study these)

          Prefixes

Old Tests---The exam format will be similar to
                      the Chapter test format.

I'll make up most of the multiple choice questions and
I'll use the notes and textbook when making them up.
About 20 prefixes will be included in a multiple choice
                      format.

Many of the short answer questions on the exam will be
exactly the same as the short answers from the tests.

This week we will go over instructions on writing up the Worm Lab Report

Guidelines for the Worm Lab:

THE LAB MUST BE TYPED (Except for Chart, Graph and Sketch)

                   Follow "OHECK" format

Think of an eye catching or generic title for the Lab

                   I. Observation---You should have this in your notebook.

II. Hypothesis---you should already have your hypothesis
in your notebook. Follow the If...Then Format

III. Experiment---Write exactly what we did. You should
be complete enough so that the reader could actually
do the lab. Give specific quantities and dates.
Write what we did with the worms. This section may
be in step or paragraph format.
Include a results section that contains the
                       following :
                       A chart with your results.
A bar graph of the Class Results---
The graph must be hand plotted on
                       Graph paper---no computer graphs !!!)
A before and after sketch of the lab (Include Labels
                       and color it)
The graph must be hand-plotted on graph paper---no
computer generated graphs. I'll give specific
instructions on the graph in class.

IV. Conclusion---Discuss whether your hypothesis was
correct or incorrect. If it was incorrect
suggest some reasons why you think it was
incorrect. If possible, come up with another
                           hypothesis.
                           Suggest some future studies you
could do that would investigate worm growth.
                           Discuss problems with the lab---
                           things that could be improved.

                    V. Kick It Off Again---State that the lab should be
repeated to insure valid results, but we didn't
repeat it due to time constraints.

The Worm Lab report is due on Wednesday, October 12

molecule, it's chemical formula, sources of the molecule (where it comes
from), and most importantly---how it's used in living cells.

2. Build a colorful and accurate model of your molecule---I'll give some
specific suggestions for this in class. Make the model light enough to be
hung from the ceiling. Do not use Clay or Wood or Play-Doh.
Make it approximately the size of a loaf of bread.

3. Prepare a large index card (6 inches by 8 inches) with facts about your
molecule and hang it from the bottom of the model. Use the pastel card I

                        is a sample quiz below.

1st Prefix List
Copy these into a separate section of your notebook. No cutting and pasting
from the computer. If you prefer, you may make flash cards for each term
instead of copying them into a notebook

For each term, try to think of a third example word. If you can't come up
with a third term that's okay. You do not need to look up a third term in
the dictionary. You do not need to give another example term for those
prefixes with only one term listed. (this means that I can only come up with
one term !!!) For example,"adipose tissue" will be the only term for adip--

We will have a prefix quiz each week. These prefixes are cumulative which
means that each week you will need to know the old words as well as the new
words for that particular week. Good study helps are : typing the list into
your own computer, making up flash cards, having someone quiz you on the
words

Here is a sample quiz. Study first, then take it and see how you do. The
quiz on Thursday will follow the same format.
