SCOPE
This coursestudies the language of music through analysis, listening, and writing. There is strong emphasis on developing aural skills such as rhythmic, melodic,and harmonic dictation as well as sight singing. An overview ofmusical forms, styles, and structures is also presented
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
The material covered in this course is equal to a semester offirst-year college Theory. Material includes scales, keys, intervals, triads, chords, melody, partwriting, harmonic function, phrases, and simple musical forms. A principal objective will be to work in andoutside of class to develop aural skills with emphasis on sight-singing, eartraining, and dictation. Shortcompositions may be assigned at the end of each semester to apply fundamentalprinciples and may be included in a concert at the end of the school year.Critical and analytical listening to major works from the Middle Ages to thepresent, as well as world culture, is included in the curriculum.

Gradesare evaluated based on the following:
