Due Wednesday, January 9: Answer the following questions about the movie "The Cave": 1. What point is being made about the what determines a person's destiny after death? 2. Why are the two boys together int he first place? What conflict has to be resolved to complete their journey to heaven? 3. What is the story teaching about the condition known as purgatory? 4. What must Kyle do to get to heaven? 5. Doe you think the story gives an accurate interpretation of life? Explain. Due Monday, January 7: Write a 1/2 page description of what you think either heaven, hell or purgatory are like. Due Wednesday, December 19: Students will work in groups of three to four to present a poster on an assigned topic. Content, Creativity and Presentation will be the criteria for evaluation. All group members are to share by speaking in the presentation. Due Friday, December 14: Write a 1/2 page reflection explaining: Do you think the Reformation could have been avoided or was it inevitable? Monday, December 17: Test on material from sites of worship onward. Due Wednesday, December 12: Johan Tetzel: (1465-1519) was a Dominican monk who made a name for himself traveling through what is now modern day Germany with his team of priests and the offer of Indulgences. He’d set up a cross behind him and began to speak to the crowds that gathered to hear him of the need for Indulgences, both for the living and for the dead. This effort, along with the charges collected by the Church and the Holy Roman Emperor from those coming to behold their collections of holy relics, set the stage for Martin Luther’s open protest that ended in posting his 95 Theses on the doors of All Saints Church in Wittenburg in order to call on the Church for an open debate of the complaints he had against what he considered to be the abuses of the Catholic Church and its hierarchy. Read the following excerpt from the speech of Johan Tetzel and answer the questions about it: Indulgences are the most precious and sublime of God's gifts. This cross (pointing to the emblem) has as much efficacy as the cross of Jesus Christ. Draw, near, and I will give you letters duly sealed by which even the sins which you shall hereafter desire to commit shall all be forgiven. I would not exchange my privileges for those of St. Peter! I have saved more souls with my indulgences than he has with his servants. There is no sin so great that indulgences cannot remit. And even if one should, which is doubtless impossible, ravish the holy Virgin, Mother of God, let him pay, only let his pay well for an indulgence, and all shall be forgiven him! Ye priests, ye nobles, ye wives, ye maidens, and you young men, hearken to your departed parents and friends who cry to you from the bottomless depths. 'We are enduring a horrible torment', they scream, 'a small alms from you would deliver us. You can give it now if you will'. Thus they cry to you from purgatory. The very moment that the money clinks against the bottom of the chest, the soul escapes from purgatory and flies free to heaven. Now just pay off, 0 senseless people! Almost like the beasts who do not comprehend the grace so richly offered. This day heaven is on all sides of you. Do you now refuse to enter? When do you intend to come in? This day you may redeem many souls." 1. What is the effect that Tetzel says will come from the purchase of his indulgences? 2. What portions of the speech do you most appealing or unappealing? Explain your answer. 3. Who among the dead are guaranteed entry into heaven for payment of indulgences? 4. Would you have listened to Tetzel and purchased his indulgences for yourself or someone else? Explain why or why not. Due Monday, December 3: Read pages 159 to 166 in the Church text and complete review questions 20 to 26 on page 174. Due Thursday, November 29: Read pages 146 to 152 in the Church text and complete review questions 1, 2, 3, and 6 on page 174. Due Friday, November 16: Write a 1/2 page reflection on the following: Has the Catholic Hierarchy been more or less beneficial for the Church? Explain your answer. Monday, November 19: Test on the Church Hierarchy Due Monday, November 12: Read pages 125 to 133 in the Church text and complete review questions 20 to 27 and 30 to 34 on page 141. Due Friday, November 2: Read Matthew 16:13-29 and write a 1/2 page reflection explaining whether or not you believe this to be a persuasive foundation for the pope's authority in the Church. Due Wednesday, October 31: Read pages 108 to 117 in the Church text and complete review questions 1 to 11 on page 141. Monday, October 22: Test on the Apostles and persecutions. Due Monday, October 15: Complete the handout on the persectutions. Due Friday,October 12: Read pages 83 to 91 in the Church text and answer questions 10 to 14 on page 104. Due Wednesday,October 10: Read pages 76-82 in the Church text and answer questions 1 to 9 on page 104. Also write out the definitions for the following on page 102: Charism, Church, Ecumenical Council, Gnostic. SEMESTER PROJECT Due Monday, December 10: Students will present a 5 to 10 minute project on a topic of their choosing from material covered in the time from December 10 through the first semester of the year in the Church course. The presentation style can be of the students’ choosing (i.e. a skit, detailed power point with presentation by group members, a video presentation, model with presentation). Students are to demonstrate thorough knowledge of the topic they have chosen. Accuracy in performance, construction, costuming/props, enthusiasm for presentation as well as originality/creativity in presentation will fill out the grading of the project. This will be graded as the MAJOR PROJECT for the second quarter and be worth 15% of the second quarter grade. Students may work alone of in groups of two to six students. Grades will be given for the group’s performance and not individually to members of each group. Students wishing to present a video will be permitted to work with students outside their class periods, otherwise students are required to work only with students from their own class period. Students presenting videos are to demonstrate beforehand an ability to produce videos in a format (DVD, CD or VHS) that can be presented on the school’s systems. MEMORY STICKS ARE NOT TO BE USED. The project will be due for presentation on Monday, December 10. Students performing in-class will be assigned a slot at that time for presentation starting on December 10 and must be prepared on that day to present. Lateness will result in loss of 5 POINTS from the grade for each day of delay. NOTE: Food-based projects are NOT to be presented in class. Students are not to bring candy, drinks or any other food or beverage to the class to be used by performers or for distribution among students in the class. The following rules apply to all presentations but especially to presentation of video projects: The use of profanity, use or suggested use of alcohol or prohibited substances or the expression of sexual or suggestion of sexual behaviors/activity is prohibited. Language, performances or portrayals that insult, deride or degrade specific groups, cultures or individuals, stereotypes or behaviors that are intended to or can be reasonably interpreted to degrade or insult others, are prohibited. Sexual or cultural stereotypes, portrayals of specific political platforms or parties, portrayals or allusions to specific people in the school community, etc. are to be avoided. Presentations are not to be used as platforms for attacks or insults against groups or individuals and if there is evidence of the attempt to do so the presentation will be ended or prohibited for edit or change or topic entirely. The use of excessive violence or dangerous “stunts” is prohibited. (Activities that have the potential for serious injury {unsafe driving conditions, dangerous stunts, jumps, “fight” choreography} is not permitted.) NOTE ALSO: Students not possessing a driver’s license are NOT to be seen driving automobiles in any video project produced. The use of incendiaries, explosive, real firearms or realistic facsimiles of weapons is prohibited. To clarify further, any behavior prohibited by the school’s standards for conduct is prohibited in a class project. Due Tuesday, October 9: Students will work in groups to present skits on selected passages from Scripture related to either the miracles or the parables of Jesus. The skit is to provide an accurate representation of the story being enacted: costume, prop and characterizations are encouraged to convey the account as accurately as possible. At the close of the skit students are to explain how the skit illustrates Jesus’ teaching about repentance, the kingdom of God or both. In addition to the skit presentation each member of the group is to write a one page reflection explaining in three paragraphs: Paragraph One: The story being presented by the group paraphrased from the gospel account. Paragraph Two: Explain the theme of Jesus’ ministry the student believes is being conveyed and illustrated by the story and why the student believes this is so. (Kingdom, Repentance or a combination of both) Paragraph Three: How does this story influence the student? What the individual student has learned about the theme represented in the story and how it has affected him or her, how has it deepened the understanding of Jesus’ ministry, its influence on how one sees Jesus or relates to Jesus after reading the story and what the story means to the student. The Paper is to be typed, double spaced and reflect the students own thoughts and not the collaborative work of the group. The Skits will be graded as Projects and evaluation will be made based on the following criteria and each student in the group will share the same grade for the presentation: Content: _____/25% Creativity: _____/25% Presentation: _____/25% The paper will be evaluated on an individual paper will be graded separately for each student on a 30 point scale as an individual project grade. The paper is include the Student's name, Group Number, Date and Topic Title for their presentation. Wednesday, October 3: Test on Hat'at to Jesus Due Tuesday, October 2: Read Matthew 5:1-48 and complete the following: 1. Identify the sections of Jesus' sermon that fit your personality and explain why this is so. 2. Identify the teaching of JEsus you find most difficult to live by in your own life and explain why. Due Tuesday, September 25: Write a 1/2 page reflection explaining whether or not you would heve wanted to be baptized by John the Baptist. Due Monday, September 24: Read Luke 3:1-20 and answer the following: 1. Who is Emperor when John begins his ministry? 2. Explain Isaiah’s prophecy that “all flesh will see the salvation of God.” 3. Does John believe in the sincerity of those coming to be baptized? Explain. 4. What advice does John give to: a) All the people who come to be baptized. b) The tax collectors who come to be baptized. c) The soldiers who come to be baptized. 5. Why does Herod have John arrested? Due Friday, September 14: read II Samuel 7:1-17 and answer the following: 1. Why does David want to build a temple for The Lord? 2. What is Nathan’s first reaction to David’s plan to build a temple for the Lord? 3. What does Nathan mean by telling David that The Lord will establish a house for David in II Sam. 7:11? 4. How will The Lord deal with the heir of King David? 5. What promise does The Lord give concerning the house of King David? Due Thursday, September 13: Read Exodus Chapters 2:23 to Chapter 4:17 and answer the following: 1. Why does God act to save the Hebrews from their slavery in Egypt? 2. Why do you think Moses is chosen to be God’s prophet? 3. List the five excuses Moses gives to avoid going to Egypt and how God responds to each. 4. What is God’s name? 5. Do you think the miracles God tells Moses to perform will impress Pharaoh? Explain. 6. What is Aaron’s role in the journey to Egypt?
