Other Important Info

Class Newsletter:
I will be sending home a class newsletter monthly. Please read each
newsletter carefully, to insure that you are informed about what is going on
in your child's classroom and school.

Friday Folders:
Friday Folders containing graded class work will be sent home as needed.
Please look through your child's folder and sign/initial the sheet stapled
to the inside cover of the folder. Also, please add any comments that you or
your child would like to make in the space provided.

Snack:
If you choose to do so, please send a HEALTHY snack (fruit, vegetables,
crackers, juice, etc.) to school with your child. Students are NOT allowed
to bring candy or soda for lunch or snack.

Lunch:
Lunch will cost $1.75 for students. You may send in a check on Mondays (for
the entire week) or place money into your child's account through the
cafeteria (for the entire week). This prevents the loss of money or the
forgetting of lunch money at home. Students that do not have lunch money
will receive a lunch of fruit, vegetables, and water provided by the
cafeteria. This is a policy that is enforced by the cafeteria. The cafeteria
provides a variety of snacks for the students at lunch. The cost of the
snacks is not included in the price for lunch ($1.75). If you would like
your child to purchase a snack in the cafeteria they need to have additional
money other than that for their lunch.

Volunteers:
If you wish to volunteer in the classroom you MUST go through the screening
process. If you wish to chaperone a field trip or work with students you
MUST have a background check completed by Wake County Public Schools. Please
visit the computer lab to register as a volunteer and check to have a
background check completed.

Project Achieve:
Carver is a Project Achieve school. Wake County provides grades 3-5 with
what is called Focus Lessons, in reading and math. These lessons are to
ensure that all the NC Standard Course of Study Goals and Objectives are
being taught. A 20-30 minute Focus Lesson will be taught every day in
reading and math. After a complete Focus Lesson unit has been taught
(usually around a week) the students will take a Project Achieve assessment
to assess their knowledge of what was taught. The teachers use this
information to determine which students need continued support or enrichment.

Pre-EOG & EOG:
Your child will be required to take what is called the Third Grade Pre End-
of-Grade Test (Pre-EOG), on July 31 - August 2, 2007. The Pre-EOG is a
multiple-choice test that measures the knowledge and skills of the reading
and math goals and objectives taught in Grade 2. The Third Grade End-of-
Grade Test (EOG) is a multiple-choice test designed to measure the knowledge
and skills of the reading and math goals and objectives taught in Grade 3.
Students are required to score a level 3 or 4 on the EOG to be passed to the
next grade. The reading Pre-EOG / EOG is a field test this year. We will not
receive these scores until the Fall of 2008.

Discipline Policy - Positive Behavior Support (PBS):
Positive Bahavior Support (PBS) is our new school wide discipline system.
Expectations have been developed and posted throughout the school for the
hallway, restroom, cafeteria, playground, assemblies, carpool, and buses.
Students will be taught these expectations throughout the first six weeks of
school and will be held accountable for them throughout the entire school
year.

Major and minor discipline infractions have also been established. Minor
infrations will be written up for documentation; however they will not be
referred to administration. If a student receives three minor referrals
within one quarter a major referral will be written and administration will
intervene. Minor Infractions Include: throwing, dress code, inappropriate
comments, put downs, tone/attitude, disruptive, refusing to work, electronic
devices, unauthorized food/drink, preparedness (includes homework), lying,
pushing/shoving, and touching. If a major referral is written, the students
will go straight to administration. Major Referrals Include: threats,
harassment of student/teacher, major dishonesty, chronic minor infrations,
fighting or aggressive physical contact, theft/stealing, noncompliance that
creates a dangerous situation, and weapons. You will be notified any time a
minor or major referral is written.

Car Riders:
Your child will report to the cafeteria for carpool this year, not outside.
In the cafeteria your child will sit at a designated table and wait for
their name to be called. When their name is called they will line up and be
escorted to load your vehicle. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: There will only be ONE
carpool lane this year, not two!! cars, vans, trucks, and SUV's will be in
the same lane next to the curb. You will be provided a name tag, with your
child's name, to be placed in the window of your vehicle. Staff members will
be recording names and calling the cafeteria via Walkie-Talkie to request
your child. Your child will then be escorted out to load. For the safety of
all students, wait for the vehicle in front of you to pull away! DO NOT go
around!!
