Dear Parents,
Preparing for End-of-Year Testing
With the end of the 2008-09 school year less than 9-weeks away, End-of-Grade and End-of-Course
testing is just around the corner for some NHCS students. Parents are encouraged to help their
students prepare for these important tests.
Log onto: http://www.nhcs.net/testing/testingcalendar.pdf to review the NHCS Testing Calendar and
determine when your child will be tested.
The results from the End-of-Grade tests are used to calculate Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) as
defined by the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation. Another significant portion of the AYP
formula is attendance. Parents, please remember it is very important for your student to attend
classes during the testing periods. As set forth by NCLB, a school must test at least 95 percent
of
students in each subgroup. For more information about End-of-Year testing, contact your child’s
school or the NHCS Testing Department at (910) 254-4230.
Make sure your child gets the appropriate amount of sleep the night before the test.
The morning of the test-taking day should be calm for your child. Make sure you and your child
are
not rushed and that your child has time to prepare for the day.
Take time to talk with your child about your confidence in him or her. Let your child know that
you
believe in him or her and emphasize the importance of simply doing their best.
Remind your child to answer all questions and not to leave any question blank.
Make sure your child arrives at school on time the day of the test.
Give your child a hug!

With so much going on, we thought a grade level calendar of events would help us all
stay organized. So here goes. Hope it helps:
Year End Field Trip to Myrtle Beach: The initial deposit of $50.00 per person has been made for
our year end trip. Now, with the actual numbers in hand, the schedule is being finalized, as
well as the total cost of the trip. After intersession, meeting will be scheduled for all
students and parents attending. This will be a mandatory meeting, so we will send a note home
as soon as a time is established.

Middle School AIG Information
In late March or early April packets for Middle School AIG nominations will be passed out to all
who are interested in having their child nominated for Middle School Academic/Intellectually
Gifted (AIG) services. This Middle School nomination packet contains an assessment form, a
student profile sheet that will need to be filled out and returned to Mrs. Maples at Codington
Elementary School. These nomination packets will be printed up at Central Office and Mrs.
Maples will need to send in a count in the next few weeks to ensure that there will be enough
packets available for every student who would like to be nominated for Middle School AIG
identification. If you would like your child to be nominated for Middle School AIG
identification, you will need to contact Mrs. Maples by February 4th. This will ensure that you
will get a packet in late spring. If you have any questions please call Mrs. Maples at 790-2236
ext 118 or email her at kmaples@nhcs.k12.nc.us .
Thank you again for all you do.
