Mrs. Hoffman
Language Arts ~ 3rd Quarter
During the third quarter, the students will be learning about the many
different types of literary techniques used in fictional writing. Students
will explore symbolism, figurative language, mood, tone, flashback,
foreshadowing, bias and propaganda as well as major themes found in works of
literature. We will read the novel Tuck Everlasting, by Natalie Babbitt, and
use this novel to highlight many of the literary techniques listed above
while reading this engaging work of fiction. Students will learn
about "loaded words", "semantic slanting" and bias as they create their own
advertisement for the water from the spring mentioned in the novel and study
common media techniques that are used in print ads found in everyday
magazines and billboards.(ie: The usage of color, words and product placement
to sell a product...)The students will write an essay evaluating their ads
and this essay will be added to their writing folders as a sample of
expository writing.
The students will then develop their own PowerPoint project using the
information learned about the various literary techniques by applying these
techniques to real-life examples that they will be shown in short television
show and movie clips. This project will count as the third quarter book
report and it will be completed entirely during our language arts classes as
we head to the Media Center to use the computers.
Students will also be studying different forms of grammar this quarter.
Prepositions, conjunctions, interjections, sentences and parts of speech will
be our primary focuses.
