Monday Letter

Shark Update for the week of  July 21st.

We had a great time at our "Meet the Teacher" night, and we hope that you did too! Our powerpoint handout was sent home via the student on Friday for all parents who were unable to attend. We look forward to seeing everyone again at our student-led conferences which are tentatively scheduled for August 7th.

We would like to remind you to please check our team website at  http://teacherweb.com/NC/DurantRoadMiddle/Sharks/index.html. Also, parent survey that we mentioned on Thursday can be found directly at http://www.quia.com/sv/2161.html.

Language Arts
The first Reading Logs were due today. Students are allowed to choose what they are reading, as long as it is paragraphs of text. (ie: no comic books) The reading log document is available from the website, as are Morphemes Tests and Answer lists. The first Morphemes Test (on List #1) is this Wednesday 7/23. This week, we are finishing a unit on organizing the five paragraph essay. Each student is writing a "Goals Paper" - a five paragraph essay about three goals s/he has for seventh grade. Our first Novel Unit will start this Friday. There will be assigned reading in the novel every night for three weeks. This assigned novel reading  does count toward completing Reading Logs.

Core math:
We are finishing our unit on Number Theory and Algebraic Reasoning this week.  There will be test Friday.  The Ch. 2 Quiz was returned Friday and the retake will be on Tuesday 7/22.  The best way to study for math tests and quizzes is to practice the problems.  Students received their math books today and should be using it to study.  The odd answers are in the back of the book which allows students to check their answers after they have practiced the problems.

Pre-Algebra:
We are finishing our unit on Algebraic Expressions and Integers and there will be a test on Friday.  Students will be able to check out a math book on a nightly basis to use as a study resource if needed.  The best way to study for math tests and quizzes is to practice the problems and then check the answers.

Science-
This week in Science is the first quiz of the year on Thursday, which covers the nature of science. Students received a copy of the Study Guide on Monday and will play a review game on Tuesday. Also on Thursday is the first Notebook Check of the year.  Please remember that your child must ask for Parent Input before the check.  On Friday, we take a deep breath and begin our unit on the Atmosphere. Don't forget to check out http://durantroadms.wcpss.net/sharks/cancellieri for more information.

Social Studies-
We are finishing up a mini-unit on culture before jumping into the past with a study of the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia. There will be a quiz on our culture notes on Tuesday. On Thursday, I will be present the project choices for our ancienct civilization project that we will be working on in-class next week. Our notebook checks with Parent Input will be on Friday. We will end the week with an art activity making hieroglyphic cartouches out of Shrinky-Dinks (remember those?)
