MRS. SPEAKS
Mrs. Speaks teaches Language Arts on the Sharks Team. She is a National
Board Certified Teacher and has taught for nine years, seven of which have
been at DRMS. She earned her B.A. in Psychology and her Masters in Education
both from The University of South Carolina. Her first two years teaching were
in Greenville, SC. She and her husband Corey have a three-year-old boy,
Nathaniel, and a eitght-month-old, Aidan. She loves Starbucks and seafood. Go
Gamecocks! =)
MRS. CARSON
Mrs. Carson teaches Math on the Sharks Team. She is a National Board
Certified Teacher and has taught for twelve years, nine of which have been
at Durant Road Middle. At High Point University, she earned her B.A. in
Middle Grades Education with Teaching Certification in Math and Social
Studies. She and her husband Bo have a dog named Kona. She plays volleyball
in a co-ed sand league an Wednesdays. She likes to eat at Panara, and she's
a Broncos fan!
MR. CANCELLIERI
Mr. Cancellieri teacher Science on the Sharks Team. He has been
teaching for eight years, all of them at Durant. Before teaching, Mr.
C earned his Bachelors degree in Marine Biology at Southampton College, a
Master of Science degree from North Carolina State University,
and worked in several science labs. He is a National Board
Certified Teaccher and was selected as DRMS Teacher of the Year for the 2003-
4 and 2007-8 school years. He and his wife Stephanie have a five-year-old
son, Cole, and a three-year-old daughter, Bella. He loves coffee, chocolate,
and Italian food. He is a fan of Boston sports teams, including the Patriots
and Red Sox.
MS. GILMORE
Ms. Gilmore teaches Social Studies on the Sharks Team. She started her
teaching career at Durant in 1998 and has taught both Language Arts and
Social Studies on the seventh grade hall. She has a B.A. in Mass
Communication from Flagler College and a Masters in Education from N.C.
State. She and her husband, Steven, both enjoy photography, and their
favorite subject is their three-year-old son, Foster. She loves food from
around the world, but her favorite treat is sushi.
MS. DOOLEY
Mrs. Dooley is the special programs teacher for the Sharks team. She was the
2006-2007 DRMS Teacher of the Year! Ms. Dooley is a veteran teacher, with 27
years experience, eight of which have been at Durant. She has taught
kindergarten through college, all subject areas. Middle school is her
favorite! Ms. Dooley is interested in teaching students how to maximize their
strengths and learn strategies to minimize their learning difficulties. She
collects angels, enjoys visits to the ocean, loves to quilt and sew, and
likes to drink tea.
MS. McDERMOTT
Ms. McDermott is a special programs teacher on the Shark team. She has
taught for 11 years, and this is her 4th year at Durant Road Middle School.
Although she has taught in both high schools and middle schools, she prefers
teaching middle school. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from
Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, where she majored in English, French and
education. She earned an MBA from the Stern School of New York University,
and a masters in special education and reading from North Carolina State
University. She is a National Board Certified teacher. Ms. McDermott loves
the beach, ballet and books; she is an avid reader, and she enjoys spending
time with family and friends.
