Meet the Teachers

The Gator Teachers: Miss DeMarco, Mrs. McInnis, Mrs. Root, Mr. Miles


Miss Monica DeMarco: Language Arts
     Miss DeMarco is joining the Gators from 7th grade track 2. This is her 
third year of teaching at Durant, and she has enjoyed every minute of it. 
Miss DeMarco had the forutnate experience of moving to Raleigh after having 
been born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. She is the youngest of five 
siblings, all of whom are also teachers. 


Mrs. Montorya Root: Math
Mrs. Root has been an educator for seven years in both Virginia and North 
Carolina.  She is licensed in elementary, middle and high school math and 
social studies.  She is a graduate of Old Dominion in both math and history 
with a Master degree in Education as well as a graduate of Lynchburg College 
with a Master degree in Educational Leadership and Supervision.  She has a 
wonderful son who attends Sanderson High School and is in the marching band.  
She loves teaching and helping both adults and children achieve their best.


MRS. JEAN MCINNIS:  Science
Mrs. McInnis, a veteran teacher of 29 years, promises she doesn't plan to 
retire any time soon. As a National Board Certified Teacher of Science, she 
loves her job, especially organizing exciting lab activities to the delight 
of her students! She has been married for 33 years and enjoys her two 
daughters, Emily (along with her husband Matt) and Leanne (who is likely to 
be getting married soon!


MR. LUKE MILES: Social Studies
Mr. Miles recently graduated from NC State University with a degree in Middle 
School Education with concentrations in Language Arts and Social Studies.  
Growing up, his mom's family were all doctors, and his dad's family were all 
teachers.  Since he can't stand to even watch ER on tv, he decided to become 
a teacher.  He is very excited about this opportunity to teach at Durant Road 
Middle School this year!
