FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common
questions of students and parents.
  1. Why does the PTA ask for a $30.00 cash donation each year?
  2. What happened at the last PTA board meeting?

Why does the PTA ask for a $30.00 cash donation each year?

The PTA believes that most families would rather donate $30.00
(more or less) then sell items door-to-door. We call it the
"Easy Fundraiser." The more families particiate, the
more likely we will have enough money to fund our important
programs such as the Teacher Grants, Red Ribbon Week, D.A.R.E.
Program, A/R End-of-Year Party, and 5th grade graduation party.
The PTA is also helps to fund the Foster Grandparent program.
After considering what dollar amount works best for your family,
please make our your tax-deductable check to "Gregory
PTA", place it in a envelope labled "PTA" and
send it along with your child's homework folder. Thank you so
much for helping to make this year's fundraising EASY.

IV.	Principals comments (Mrs. Vickers)

A.	Mr. Engle
Mr. Engle had an unexpected triple bypass procedure just before
Spring Break. He is recovering but may not be back to school
this year. Ms. Vickers will need an assistant between now and
the end of school and is waiting to find out who the assistant
will be.

B.	Kidz Inc. Magazine
There is an article in Kidz Inc. magazine (The Cutting Edge) in
which a Gregory student was interviewed about the science fair,
Dr. Seuss day, etc.

C.	EOGs
Our EOG testing date has been moved up to May 12-14, 2009, and
this change affects all of New Hanover County. Gregory will need
volunteers to help during these days.

D.	Instructional Resource Advisory Committee
This new committee was formed to allow teachers who want to grow
in their profession to help with staff development and utilize
available research to structure the schools curriculum. The
committee will consider what is and is not working with the
curriculum and recommend changes based on what Gregory students
need. The committee will report to the school improvement
team and make sure its recommendations align with the goals of
both the school and the state.

E.	Discipline
Discipline has improved this year but could still be better.
Gregory will implement Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) next
year. There will be expectations communicated to the children in
every classroom. This program will be used in addition to what
Ms. Blanch has already implemented. It is a very positive
program and is used by several other schools in the district.

F.	Everyday Math
This is a voluntary math curriculum that will be implemented next
year and focuses on problem solving and critical thinking. The
program offers children different ways to solve math problems.
There will be at least two teachers per grade level that
implement this program and in some grades all of the teachers
want to use this program. Mr. Fernley has used Everyday
Math before and thinks it is a good program.

V.	Old Business

A.	Fundraising

PTA made approximately $400 from Jelly Beans night.
PTA received $13.22 from Foot Locker.

B.	Yearbook (Leticia Holiday)
Final yearbook additions will be turned in today, and we will
receive the finished books in mid-May. We have sold around 100
yearbooks (for approximately $1900) and have about 100 more to
sell. A last chance flyer will go out to students and their
parents around the first of May. Also, Lifetouch has faxed us a
contract to commit to use them for yearbook and pictures next
year.

C.	Bingo Night (Julie Coxe)
Bingo Night will be held in the cafeteria on April 23. Pizza
will be served from 5-6pm, and Bingo will start at 6pm. A flyer
will go home with students this week to help determine head count
and appropriate pizza order for Bingo Night. There will be 20
rounds of Bingo and more rounds will be added if more prizes are
donated.

D.	Teacher Appreciation (Jennifer Adams)
Teacher Appreciation week will be held May 4-8, and the week will
be much like last year. Each day will have a theme:
Monday-Family Thank You
Tuesday-Teacher Breakfast put on by the PTA
Wednesday-Teacher gifts
Thursday-Spa gifts
Friday-Teacher luncheon

E.	Reuse-Resell-Recycle Sale (Penny Sidbury)
The sale will be held on May 30. Flyers are ready and
availablethe PTA will get $10 per space and an extra $5 if
participants need the use of a table. Spaces are available on a
first come, first served basis because
limited amount of tables and slots are available. The money
raised from the sale of items will be kept by the seller but that
money can always be donated to Gregory.

F.	5th Grade Graduation (Leticia Holiday)
5th Grade Graduation will be June 9 at the Williston auditorium
at 6pm. This year, instead of a guest speaker, one student from
each 5th grade class will discuss their experience at Gregory
during the ceremony. Some parents have agreed to provide
graduation caps for the students the money for the
caps will not come out of the PTA funds. In addition, the
children will get a trophies or plaques rather than medals this
year. Graduation expenses will come out of money already
allotted for the ceremony in the PTA's budget there will not be
any additional funds requested.

G.	5th Grade Dance (Leticia Holiday)
The 5th Grade Dance will be held at Pine Valley Country Club and
the use of the facility is free. The dance will be held on June
10, 2009 from 6-8 and
the DJ will cost $250. The PTA will provide punch and cookies
for the
students, and the students will be charged $3 to attend the
dance. This
money will offset the cost of the punch and cookies, and any
additional
funds will go into the PTA budget for the 5th grade dance next
year. About
75-80 kids are expected to attend the dance.
