About Mrs. Edwards

I am excited to be part of the great staff at Harkers Island Elementary
School. I have always loved Carteret County's Down East area, and have
attended almost all the Core Sound Decoy festivals. I taught 8th grade
English/Language Arts for 24 years in Pitt County and a year at Havelock
Middle School before coming to Harkers Island Elementary. I have been
married for 28 years to Gene Edwards. I have a son, Richard, a
daughter ,Lora, and son-in-law, Justin, who live in Boone, North Carolina.
I LOVE teaching, and have dedicated my life to helping students become
successful, productive citizens. I believe reading is the key to success,
and I house an extensive library of young adult literature of both classic
and current titles. I am constantly on the look-out for books that will be of
interest to my students.

Mrs. Edwards' Mission Statement

My goal for the 2009 - 2010 school year is to have my students learn that
readng and social studies are extremely important skills for future
success. I believe there is nothing you can't accomplish if you can read,
and a knowledge of history allows for a deeper understanding of today's
world. By the end of the year I expect all my students to have the
knowledge necessary to show competency and significant growth on the North
Carolina Reading End-of-Grade Reading test.

In social studies, students will display a deeper knowledge of the history
of our state, and other regions of the world. They will learn how that
knowledge can be used in our daily lives. We will also focus on current
events and their impact on the world.
