Content Rubric for Art

The following is a basic rubric that I follow for grading in art. I generally do not put the
grade on the artwork, as I have found that students sometimes brag and compare grades. I want
to discourage that kind of competition. I will, however, be happy to discuss grades with
parents or students privately.

Level Scoring Criteria


4

Student work meets assignment objectives and:
Student work shows a degree of ability, effort, and craftsmanship that goes beyond targeted
grade level standards. Student adds appropriate details beyond what is directed by the
teacher. Student expands knowledge by finding connections or creating art outside of the
classroom.


3 Student work meets assignment objectives.
Student understands the assignment and works independently. Student follows directions and
shows good work habits.


2 Student cannot meet assignment objectives without assistance.
or
Some objectives and expectations were not met because student did not follow all directions, or
work was sloppy or incomplete.



1 Student work did not meet the objectives and was below standard.
Student consistently did not follow directions or student did not attempt the assignment.
Student shows little effort and poor use of class time.
