We will start out by focusing on high frequency words, word
families, and stretching out words like a rubber band to hear all the
sounds. Some groups will spend a little more time on reviewing and
relearning some of the sounds the letters make. Vowels can be very tricky
for some children so we will focus on those thoroughly over the next quarter.
We will review writing skills through the interactive writing
piece. Since many of the students are having difficulty with the retelling
of stories we are working hard on that component before moving on into more
challenging stories. We are using a flow chart and pictures to help us
remember what is expected of us for retelling. During reading we have
a “Helping Hand” which has strategies we’re using when coming across a new or
challenging word. A copy of this as well as the flow chart will be something
you will see soon in your child’s baggie. Please be sure your child is
rereading the book sent home each night.
The following 25 high frequency words are the ones we are reviewing first.
Then we will move on into the required first grade words. Please review
these at home as well.
