As with the narrative retelling for levels 1-6, we are not requiring the children to independently retell the main idea and details of the story. However, we want the children to talk about what they have learned from the story. In time with continued instruction and exposure, we want the children to be able to tell the main idea and details from an expository text as well as make some kind of connection to it or tell what they already knew about the topic and how they knew.
The idea once again is that they learn how to discuss this type of book and when they reach a level 7 they will know what is expected and they will have an lots of instruction and practice on retelling an expository text. When the reach the level 7 books they will be able to read it accurately, fluently and be able to retell the important components with little prompting.
