Happy 2010!
It's hard to believe we are already in the second semester of fourth grade
(third quarter). I have to thank all of you AGAIN for your generosity this
holiday season. My holiday break with family and friends up north was COLD,
snowy, but wonderful. From what your children have told me, it seems as
though everyone enjoyed the time off.
Now that we are back and it is a New Year, we have began our Resolutions in
writing. Students were asked to pick at least one thing they hope to change
or improve on this year. Also, these resolutions will be written, signed, and
displayed proudly in our hallway.
In reading, students are discovering different types of Fiction, and will be
reading/performing science fiction, historical fiction, folktales, legends,
and novels. Our focus for all of third quarter is shifting from non-fiction
to fiction. Please encourage your child to read fiction this quarter to
reinforce what we are learning in class.
Math third quarter shifts from multiplication to measurement, division, and
fractions. These first few weeks we are focusing on the metric system and
understanding kilo, hecto, deca, deci, centi, and millimeters! We are also
exploring mass and temperature.
We are back to Social Studies for the first few weeks before and after track
out. We will study Unit 5 (Government and Citizenship) before track out. The
test will be open book and on Friday, January 15th. After we return, we will
explore the different cultures in North Carolina and do some project-based
learning. Science will begin at the end of February and we will be housing
frogs, crabs, and millipedes in our classroom. Oh boy!
Finally, as we get nearer to tracking out, please remember we will be moving
into a "new" room. We now live in room 405. We are moving across the hall to
room 408 when we return. All materials taken home on Wednesday January 20th,
should return on February 11th when we track back in.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know!
Thanks and only a few weeks until another break!
