Thank you for helping your child find an appropriate current event article last week. The students came in last Friday with an article from a magazine, newspaper, or online and completed a graphic organizer using information from the current event. This was a very meaningful activity that incorporated reading and writing as well as learning across other subject areas such as Science and Social Studies. I enjoyed reading each student's article. There was such a variety of information shared. Here are some examples of news shared by some students
- A new railroad crossing in downtown Apex with a z-shaped formation to force pedestrians to look both ways.
- President Obama's four day visit to China to build deeper ties with China as well as a visit with his half-brother Mark Obama Ndesandjo who lives in China.
- The first orthopedic surgeon in space made repairs outside the International Space Station.
- Three new ancient crocodile species fossils found in Niger and Morocco.
Now that the students know the expectations of this current event activity, they will begin having this additional homework more regularly. Although it won't be assigned every week, it will be assigned often. Students will continue using their assignment binder to keep track of new assignments as they are given. Please help your child stay organized...we had about 5 students who did not have a current event article with them on Friday and had to sign the binder.
There are 3 current events websites on the LINKS page of this website. Please encourage your child to use these "kid friendly" sites.
Thanks so much for your ongoing support!
