Hello! My name is Kirsten Abel and this is my third year teaching at
Highcroft. I have a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and a
Master's degree in Literacy and Language. I have been teaching elementary
school since 1994 when I made a big move from Burlington, VT to Florida!
Since then I have taught first, second, and third grades in Florida and
Massachusetts. I have also been a reading teacher to students in first
through third grades.
Most recently I have been a fourth grade Track 1 teacher at Highcroft.
My husband John and I moved to Apex in June of 2007 from Shrewsbury,
Massachusetts. We have two boys named Jayce and Liam. Liam is a second grader
at Highcroft and Jayce is a sixth grader at Apex Middle School. We will be
one of many families juggling two schedules this year since Apex Middle
follows the traditional calendar.
I love all kinds of animals. Some unusual furry (and not so furry) friends I
have had in the past include ferrets, pet rats, and even an iguana. I now
own the more domestic kind of pets which are my two cats and a Pug named
Percy.
I am exited to teach fifth grade this year. I feel my experience with the
WCPSS curriculum in third and fourth grades will benefit the students as they
use the academic foundation from the previous grades and expand into the
fifth grade curriculum. Knowing the students as they have moved through the
grades is definitely an added benefit! The fifth grade students know me from
math Team Time in fourth grade as well as every day contact in the third
grade hallway, the fourth grade Husky Hut, and the many learning experiences
and field trips we have been involved in.
Some of my favorite pastimes are exercising, shopping, reading, and eating
anything chocolate!
My mission for the class is to inspire each child to have confidence in
their abilities to create, problem solve, and achieve. I believe learning is
a partnership between home and school. As a parent, I realize the importance
of ongoing communication and collaboration so that our children can reach
their full potential.
