Enrichment

*The most important thing you can do is read to your child every day.

*Sight words we have had this year - Please continue to practice these with
your child. One of the best ways I have found to aid the students in
remembering words is to place them around your home on familiar objects
which have significance to the word (ex. The word "in" could be placed on a
door - each time the child goes in the door, he/she touches the word and
says "in").
 - New words are sent home each Wednesday in your child's folder
     - color words
     - number words- one to ten
     - I - all
     - can - and
     - a - are
     - big - eat
     - go - is
     - like - little
     - me - my
     - the - we
     - it - in
     - to - see

*Book Exchange Program

Every night Monday through Thursday your child will bring home one emergent
reader book. Please read this book with your child and return it to school
the next day so we can continue rotating it through the classroom. At the
beginning of the year, your child will probably need your help reading the
book. As the year progresses, it is our goal to let the students take over
and read the book to you. After reading the book, remember to ask your child
to sequence the events, and ask some important comprehension questions, such
as - Who were the characters?, What does this story make you think about?, and
What did the author want us to learn? Along with the book your child will
have a Reading Record Folder. In this folder please record the emergent
reader book's title and your initials (you may also record other books read
at home). For chapter books, each chapter read can be recorded. We have a
100 book club in our classroom, and we use these folders to keep track of how
many books your child has read, so please return the folder to school each
day with the emergent reader book. At the end of the year, every student who
has read at least 100 books will be given a certificate in recognition of all
their hard work. Along with this program, I ask that for each time a student
reads or rereads a book, a penny is placed in the bag with the emergent
reader book and returned to school. All of the pennies go into a jar that is
kept until the end of the year. At this time the money will go towards a
special surprise to celebrate all the hard work the students put into reading
over the course of Kindergarten.
