Second Grade Stars

November 6, 2009

Dear Parents,

Hello! We had another great week. We ended this week with an in house
science field trip called "What's the Matter?" Hightouch, higtech presented
several hands on activities which reinforced the objectives that we learned
over the quarter about solids, liquids, gases and plasma (ask the children).
Please don't be alarmed over the invisible ink. It does not stain and
disappears almost immediately. :)

Here is what we have been doing:

Math - Renaming and Measurement - We began to learn how to measure in
centimeters and discussed line segments. We will continue this unit
throughout the next week, in addition to beginning geometry. Further we
began to take our Quarterly Math Assessment. Please continue to practice
math facts with your child, riding in the car, at dinner, etc. In Team Time
we will begin money.

Social Studies - We have completed our unit on long ago and will began to
learn about holiday traditions until the end of the quarter.

Word Study - We will begin to study a new set of words beginning on Monday.
This will be our last set this quarter.

Literacy - We continue to work on non-fiction text, learning to identify key
words. Next week we will begin discussing the author's purpose and making
connections to the text. I am also completing running records.

Writing - We are working on ways to revise our pieces. Some students are
interested in bringing in their own "toolboxes." I am pleased that they are
interested in doing so. It keeps them writing. I will begin writing
assessments next week also.

Special Notes:

*Congratulations to Sejin Park for earning the Terrific Kid of the Month
award for Respect!!!
*We have acquired a new student. Her name is Kristen. The students have
done a wonderful job welcoming her into the class.

*Book Fair - Our preview day is on Tuesday from 2-2:20 and our purchasing day
is Thursday from 10:15-10:35.

*Classroom Pets - If anyone is interested in pet sitting for Snickers (guinea
pig) or Henry (hamster) over track out, please let me know. We will be
traveling in December to Ottawa for a week for my older son's hockey
tournament.

Items Needed:
Treasure Box Items
Hand Sanitizer

Have a great weekend! The Carolina Hurricanes are not doing so well, but
keep rooting for them. They will pull through!! GO CANES
