County Fair Information

County Fair Information - This is a copy of the letter sent home detailing the
components of our in progress COUNTY FAIR RESEARCH PROJECT.

Your child has selected the North Carolina county of ____________________ for
our 4th grade County Fair Project. We want everyone to be aware of the expectations
and deadlines so there are no last minute surprises! Our County Fair learning
experience will take place on Friday, June 26th but there is a timeline of due dates
that will precede this activity, including periodic project checks to ensure that all
students are progressing at a reasonable pace. These dates will be posted ahead of
time and students are expected to bring in all required material on those dates.

This project has four different parts:

• The first part of this project is a letter written to the county requesting
information. Using various databases, students will find the address of the chamber
of commerce, address the envelope, and write the letter. This letter will be written
in class, and the format for how the letter must be written is in their packet.
Students are expected to bring in a stamp or 50 cents by Wednesday, April 22nd.
Letters will be mailed by the teacher Friday, April 24th. This will give the counties
ample time to read and respond to the letters so that we can begin the second part of
the project. Any student who is unable to complete this letter in class by Friday,
April 24th will be responsible for completing the letter on their own and mailing the
letter on their own.

• The second part of this project is the research component. Students are
expected to find answers to 16 categories of questions. I will get the students
started and will show the students how I would like for them to complete the
research. I will also give some class time to complete the research. However,
students are expected to complete the majority of the research at home. We are asking
that students bring in a pack of lined 3x5 index cards and a holder/case by Monday,
May 4th. We will set up the index cards that day in the format necessary to draft
our report. There will be two dates in which we will check in with the students to
chart their progress made with their research: Friday, May 15th and Friday, May 22nd.
There should be marked progress made between these two dates. All research must be
complete by Friday, May 29th.

• The third part of this project is the research report. The rough draft must
be written at school. We will spend the week of June 1st –June 5th drafting this
report in class. Student drafts will be collected on Friday, June 5th to be graded.
Rough drafts will be returned to students on Friday, June 12th. Students should then
make any necessary revisions and publish this report at home. Reports may be typed or
handwritten. TWO copies of the final copy are required. One copy is required in a
report cover and one copy must be stapled only. Final copies are due on Wednesday,
June 24th.

• The fourth part of this project is the presentation. The students are
required to make a visual aid on a tri-fold presentation board. Requirements for the
presentation board will be given in class on June 5th. There is also an optional
second visual aid that students may elect to create. The presentation board and
optional visual aid is due to school on Thursday, June 25th. Our County Fair Learning
Experience is Friday, June 26th.

This is the culminating activity of our study of North Carolina. Please offer
guidance and support for your child as needed, but please urge your child to take
responsibility for managing their time and materials. We look forward to an exciting
and fun fair!
