SIGHT WORDS TO PRACTICE AT HOME:

color words, letters, I, a, is, the, and, look, me, see, we, you, like, it, can

*you can practice sight words by creating a memory game, bingo game, writing them on wipe
boards, or finding them in a book or newspaper

MATH-
We are working on recognizing and making sets of #s 1-20.  Have your child count out different sets of objects (such as cereal, pennies, paper clips, etc).  We talk about how "teenager numbers" start with the number 1.

We are also working on patterning.  Have your child find different patterns around your home and have your child make patterns out different objects in your home.  We have worked on AB, AAB, ABB, and ABC patterns

We have started learning about ordinal numbers.  Have your child put some toys in a line and ask him/her to point to the first object, second, third, etc.

The students are loving story problems!  At home, you can make up simple word problems, such as:

*I had 5 pumpkins, you gave me 4 more.  How many do I have now?
*There were 10 scarecrows in the field.  3 ran away.  How many are left?
*I have 8 apples.  Some are red, some are yellow.  3 are red.  How many are yellow?

Lastly, please work with your child on sorting.  Have your child sort cereal, and candies.  Your child can also sort clothes and little objects around the house.  We are working on sorting by color, size, shape, etc.

WRITING-
Have your child practice writing at home each night.  Our focus right now is drawing a detailed picture to match our story topic, and sounding out our words slowly and writing all of the sounds that we hear.  We have learned about "rubber band" words that we can stretch out slowly.  They should sound out the word, write the first sound that they hear, then sound it out again and write the second sound, then continue till they have written all of the sounds that they can hear in the word.  You should be able to tell what the child's story is about by looking at the details in their illustration.

Please remember to leave a rest towel in your child's cubby and a full change of clothes.  Send a water bottle to school labeled with your child's name each day for recess.
