How involved should the parent/guardian be during homework time?

As little as possible. The parent should help set up a quiet area in the house
with minimal distractions. Any materials like pencils, notebook paper,
calculator, books, dictionaries and such should be readily located in this
area. However, once the homework process begins, your fifth grader should be
able to do most assignments with minimal/no help. Almost always, homework is a
review. If you have to spend a great deal of time helping your child through
an assignment, please have your child let me know.

If you would like to listen to your child read and then ask comprehension
questions, that would be terrific...you know, with all that extra time you
have. I have attached some question starters that can guide you in asking
grade appropriate questions. It is entitled: Marzano's Question Stems. The
further you get down on the page, the more thought provoking the answer should
be.

Can my child have food and drink in class?

Sure. I would prefer drinks to be water, juice or sugar-free drinks and that
snacks be single serving and as healthy as possible. I do not allow caffeine
or candy to be eaten during the normal school day. These are permitted,
however, on very infrequent special occasions.

Can I send in treats for my child's birthday?

The policy that has been issued by our Leadership Team is that are treats sent
in should be individually wrapped and as nutritious as possible. Treats will
be distributed by the student at lunch time, in the cafeteria. Homemade items
are absolutely, not allowed, and will be sent back home.

Am I a winner?

If you are reading this, please have your child come to me the next day and
whisper in my ear, "Am I a Winner?" and your child will receive a prize. I
would greatly appreciate it if you and your child could keep this FAQ a secret
because I am trying to see how many people really read this section. Thanks
for your cooperation.
