I am excited to be at Highcroft Drive this year, filling in for Mrs. Combs,
who's on maternity leave with her precious baby daughter!
My bachelor's degree is in Music Education and I've also earned my Level 1
certification in the Orff-Schulwerk approach to music teaching and learning.
I taught early childhood music for many years and, for the last two, have
come back to elementary music and taught alongside of the wonderful Ms. Kip
Caton at Fuquay-Varina Elementary School.
One of the highlights of my years at Fuquay was the start of a 5th Grade
Percussion Ensemble, using barred instruments, drums and other percussion
instruments. We worked on marimba music and African drumming as well. I am
looking forward to giving our students at Highcroft some of these musical
experiences too!
My goal (one I share with Mrs. Combs) is to teach the National Standards of
Music Education using the Orff-Schulwerk approach. This is definitely
a "hands on" process and involves the students in every aspect of music
making - singing, moving, playing instruments. Carl Orff once said, "Tell
me, I forget; show me, I remember; involve me, I understand." It's an
exciting process - for students and for me as well.
Thank you in advance for all your support this year! I know it can be
difficult to adjust to a different teacher, especially one as well loved as
Mrs. Combs. Be assured that I will do my best to continue such an excellent
program!
