The Wake County Public School System includes Character Education in their curriculum by having the schools focus on a Character Trait each month for eight months beginning in September and ending with a review of traits in May focusing on Citizenship. The Highcroft PTA is helping Mrs. Chapman, the school counselor, with introducing the traits in each classroom.
A volunteer goes into the classroom each month and presents a very easy-to-follow lesson on the character trait to the students. The timing of the lesson is coordinated between the volunteer and classroom teacher. Lessons for grades K-2 last from 20 to 30 minutes and lessons for grades 3-5 last 30 to 40 minutes. Volunteers are supplied with a lesson plan, books, and discussion questions. If you are comfortable doing Mystery Reader or Centers with the kids, you will enjoy this, too.
Multiple volunteers can alternate giving the lessons or conduct the lessons together. This is a great way to get into the classroom and get to know the students and the teacher. Trudi D'Ambrosio, the PTA Vice President of Programs, is the acting Chairperson of Character Education. If you have any questions regarding the program or are interested in volunteering you can email her at tdambrosio@bellsouth.net.
