Safety Patrol updates

February 13th Update:
Wow, its hard to beleive its time for Track 3 & 4 SP to get back to work. Thank you to all the
Track 1 & 2 SP who deligently kept up with their duties thoughout the cold weather season. You
are appreciated! Track 3 &4 SP duties changed little this quater. I changed a few captains
around to give others an opportunity. I also gave a few SP a third duty, so check the schedule
carefully.

December 13th Update:
Be sure to check out the Safety Patrol Bulletin Board in the main hallway outside the
cafeteria. Thanks to Mrs. Dahm for putting it together. I hope to have a new schedule for
Tracks 1 & 2 Safety Patrols posted by December 18th. The last day for Track 3 & 4 Safety
Patrols on the current schedule is December 19th.

November 4th Update:
First, let me apologize for not updating recently. Track 1 & 2 Safety Patrols you have been
doing an outstanding job! Thanks. Your last day to work is this Friday, November 7th. Enjoy
your time off because you will be back at it in January. By the way if your schedule has
changed please let me know, so I can update the schedule. If I don't hear from you, you will
probably remain on the same day but your duty could change.
Welcome back to duty Track 3 & 4 Safety Patrols! Your first day is November 10th. I have
updated the schedule. I believe most everyone stayed on the same duty shift, but I changed up
the duties. Most likely, if you had car pool last time you will have bus or hallway this time.
I also changed a few of the captains to make sure all fifth grade safety patrols had an
opportunity to perform that important job. If your schedule has changed and you can't perform
your assigned duties please let me know.

All for now. Keep up the good work!
September 17th update:
A new schedule has been posted for Tracks 1 & 2 that will begin when Track 1 returns on
September 29th. I left everyone on the same days, but I had to shift some duties around. Most
duties remain unchanged. If you are getting tired of your current duty hang in there. I will
make some bigger changes at the beginning of the Third quarter. There is a couple of reasons I
moved some people around. One was to give the fifth graders who haven't been captain a chance
to be captain. If you are no longer a captain its not because you did something wrong. I just
wnat to give all fifth graders an opportunity to be a captain. Second, four new SP have been
added who for one reason or another were not ready last quarter. Please welcome Will,
Nicholas, Emily and Wendy to our fine group of Safety Patrols. I will be tracked out September
29-october 3rd. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Dahm.

September 9th update:
Yikes, all the Track 3 & 4 Fifth grade Safety Patrols will be on an overnight Field Trip next
Monday and Tuesday! I have replaced all the fifth graders who have duty on those two days with
fourth graders and pulled in two Track 2 fifth graders to serve as captains. Check out the
Safety Patrol schedule tab on this website to see if you are replacement SP for those days. If
you are a replacement you will also be getting a hard copy.

August 29 Update:
Track 3 & 4 safety Patrols are doing an outstanding job. I appreciate your enthusiasm. I made
a couple of changes to the schedule and have posted the revised schedule on this website as well
as the bulletin board at school. The revisions affect 3 Safety Patrols - Owen, Lindsey and
Grace. I appreciate these students and their parents patience and flexibility as I work out a
scheduling gliche caused by my mistake. Starting next week I will be taking pictures of all
Safety Patrols for a wall display Mrs. Dahm and I are working on. Stay Tuned and keep checking
weekly for updates and revisions.

August 19 Update:
Make up training was held for those who have missed the previous trainings. We now have 84
Safety Patrols! Wow! Track 1 & 2 Safety Patrols have done an outstanding job, and can take a
well deserved break until September 29th. The permanent schedule for Tracks 3 & 4 begins
Thursday, August 21st. That schedule will be handed out in classrooms tomorrow. It is also
posted in the fifth grade hallway, the helathroom and on my website. All Safety Patrols are
required to check my website weekly for schedule revisions and updates. As always, let me know
if you have any questions or problems with the schedule.

August 14 Update:
Training for Track four was held this week. If you didn't make it don't worry, I have scheduled
a make-up Training for Tuesday, August 19th, 8:30 in the gym. This will be the final
opportunity to get trained as a safety patrol. Because several SP candidates were unable to
attend the training, a full SP schedule will not be published until Wednesday or Thursday for
Track 3 & 4 SP. Instead, I have put together a temporary, 3 day schedule for August 18, 19 &
20th. This will also give Track 3 SP a chance to get settled in before having to begin duty.
All for now. Let me know if you have any questions. And remember to check this website weekly
for updates and schedule revisions.

July 30 Update:
Applications for Track 3 & 4 safety patrol candidates are now awailable by clicking on the SP
application menu item and opening the document. Training for Track 4 safety patrol candidates
and Track 3 SP candidates who missed the July Training is set for August 13th, 8:30 in the Gym.
The only reminder about the training will be a morning announcement the day before. The
applications are due that Monday, August 11. Track 3 & 4 Sp will begin working August 15th.

July 29th update
Today we had a make up training for those who missed the first training session. The Training
went great and it is great to have more eager Safety Patrols.

One of the challenges of heading up the safety patrol is communication. We have safety patrol
on all four Tracks, two grade levels and several classrooms. In the past I have been able to
make the rounds to hand out new schedules or to relay information. That is no longer feasable.
Therefore, I have decided to make it a requirement of Safety Patrol to check this website weekly
for updates and schedule revisions. If you do not have access at home you can do it at school.

I have added two new positions to the safety patrol schedule. They are Hallway duties. One is
right outside the cafeteria in the main hallway and is called Hallway (cafe) the other is the
doors leading from the bus loop to the fifth grade hallway and is called Hallway (5th). The
duties of these two postions are pretty much the same. They stand in the middle of the hallway
and encourage students to walk. As students approach the door they should open and hold the
door for them.

All for now. e-mail me if you have any questions.

July 16th Update
Safety Patrol for the new school year will start next week, July 21st. Track 1 & 2 Safety
Patrols will work the first six weeks of each quarter. Track 3 & 4 Safety Patrol will work the
remaining six weeks of each quarter. A schedule with duty assignments will be handed out and
posted on this website.

We have over 80 fourth and fifth grade students signed up to be safety patrols. This is
fantastic and I appreciate the student's enthusiasm to help out and provide leadership at their
school. The most positive aspect of having this many Safety Patrols is that the duties can be
spread out and not become a hardship on any student. Safety Patrol is a year long committment
and I think it will be easier to fulfill that committment with a limited number of duties each
week. I was able to get most safety patrols 2 duties a week. I apologize if you only have one
duty a week. I promise it was totally random how it worked out. If somone drops out those who
have only one duty will be the first to fill in.

Training on July 16th was successful. Mrs Dahm, who is assisting in coordinating the program,
and I went over the criteria and expectations for being a SP and the
responsibilities of the different duties. If you missed the training, the Safety Patrol
candidate should contact Mr. Nichols about a make up training session. Safety Patrols will not
be added to the schedule until they have completed the training.

New for this year's SP is the use of captains. Only fifth graders are eligible to be captains.
Their duty is to make sure all safety patrols are at their assigned duties and on time. They
have a chart to record absences and tardies. Mr. Nichols will review the chart weekly.
Captains also fill in if someone is late or absent. I'll try to make sure all fifth grade
safety patrols in good standing have an opportunity to be captain sometime during the school
year.

If Safety Patrols know in advance they will miss a duty they should attempt to find a
replacement. Sometimes unexpected things happen and thats ok, but sp should still make an
effort to inform Mr. Nichols of their absence by e-mail or calling the front office, even if it
is after the fact.

I'll try to keep this updated when any changes occur. If you have any questions please contact
me at dnichols@wcpss.net
