Special Events

First in Fitness
Highcroft Drive Elementary participates in the school districts' First In
Fitness Event. FIF is a special one day event that promotes physical
fitness. Students qualify for FIF based on fitness test scores and behavior
in physical education class. Grades 3, 4 and 5 participate. One boy and one
girl from each grade participate in one of six events. They compete with
children of the same grade and gender from other Southern Area Elementary
Schools. The events are mile run, pull-ups, standing long jump, one minute
timed jump rope, shuttle run, triathlon (fifth grade only),and 100 yard
dash. FIF is held in April at a local High School. Fitness Testing for FIF
events will begin in October.

Jump Rope For Heart 2009
Highcroft Drive Elementary has developed a strong tradition of supporting
Jump Rope For Heart, and has become a leader among Wake County Schools in
their support of this worhtwhile event. In 2007 Highcroft raised more money
than any other school in Wake County and was the tenth highest in the State!
In 2008, we raised a school record of over $23,000. If you are not familiar
with the event, it is a fundraiser for the American Heart Association.
Students ask family members and neighbors for monetary donations to support
them in jumping rope. Students also learn about the importance of exercise to
keep their Heart Healthy. The event takes place in February during P.E.
class.

President's Fitness Challenge
Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 will take part in the President's Fitness
Challenge. The President's Fitness Challenge is a program designed to
encourage student's to improve their level of physical fitness. Students
physical fitness is assessed using five tests. They include the mile run,
shuttle run, sit and reach, pull ups or flexed arm hang, and curl-ups. Based
on their scores, students can qualify for awards.

Field Day
I would like to thank all of the wonderful parents who volunteered at last
year's Field Day. You were great! If you are new to Highcroft, Field Day
usually happens toward the end of the school year after EOGs. To make it
successful we need lots of volunteers to manage the stations.
