Upcoming Units of Study:

Math – the students worked really hard with money last week.  They need to continue counting money and determining coin combinations and change.  I suggested they count the change in your pockets, wallets, etc… (I told them they had to give the money back)  This week we will work with addition and subtraction concepts, finding the unknown, and use tables to solve problems.

Reading – this week we will focus on trickster tales.  These stories use animal characters with human features to help us understand human nature and behavior.  We will also work on identifying the main idea and supporting details when reading expository text, summarizing the main idea, and sequencing.

Writing – the students are looking forward to the Great Mail Race.  We will be mailing the letters later this week to the schools in various states and then wait for a response.  We will track the responses on a large USA map in our classroom.  We mailed our first friendly letters last week.  This week’s spelling words are words with the ‘oi’ sound.

Social Studies and Science – in social studies, will begin unit 3, ‘People and Communities Over Time.’  In science we will learn about shadows and how they change throughout the day.  Students need to be working on their Objects in the Sky projects and looking at the moon each night for the Moon Calendar project.

Reminders/Important Dates/Tidbits:

  • Please send in your contributions for our Ice Cream Celebration by November 10th.
  • There is no school on Wednesday, November 11th!

  • Thanks for all your contributions for our O’ Holly Night Basket.  Special thanks to Kami Esterline for putting our NC State basket together this year.  I have had the honor J of having the NCSU basket for many years now…it is a popular basket each year.  I am excited to see how this year’s basket turns out.
  • The last day to turn Scholastic book orders in is November 16th.  If you’d like to order off the website, please visit http://www.scholastic.com/clubsordering

  • Third grade is a demanding year and the move from second to third grade is a huge transition for most children.  I establish rules and procedures from the very first day of school because I truly believe that students thrive when they are in a structured environment.  One of my goals is to keep behavior issues at a minimum so I can teach and children can learn.  Developing positive student behaviors and work habits is crucial for the success of students.  For the past several weeks, there have been many students that have not been completing homework, class work, and have made poor behavior choices.  Please take a few moments to speak with your child about their behavior and work habits and encourage them to put their best effort forth.  I appreciate your support and look forward to seeing positive changes!
