Wake County's Philosophy for School Counselors
· All students should have access to a counselor who is full time, state certified, and master's degree level.
· That counselors should spend a majority of their time working directly with students in the three domains of academic, personal/social, and career.
· Schools are a microcosm of society reflecting a culture characterized by diversity, complexity, and changing values in the home, school, and community.
· The counseling program should be aligned with district and school goals.
Counselors at Hunter Elementary believe:
· All students can learn and should be given the opportunity to do so.
· All students have dignity and worth and have a right to a safe, mutually respectful, healthy and orderly learning environment.
· Learning involves the education of the whole person and is a continuous lifelong process.
· All students, teachers, and parents should have access to the counseling services.
· The counselor demonstrates professional growth and participates in professional growth experiences.
· Learning requires the active participation, mutual respect, and individual accountability of students, teachers, staff, and community members.
· Diversity is to be respected and appreciated as we foster unity among our students, faculty, staff, and community.
· The counselor should be a strong advocate for all students.
· The counselor is a member of the educational team who helps all students meet their developmental needs and academic potential.

· Consider all students' ethnic, cultural, racial, and special needs when planning and implementing the school counseling program.
· Be a comprehensive, developmental, balanced, and student centered program where all students can achieve success.
· Include education that allows students to develop lifelong skills that can assist in the pursuit of their life goals.
· Address the needs of the school and continuously evaluate outcomes using data.
· Be collaborative in nature and guided by input from students, staff, parents, and community members.
· Adhere to the ethical standards of the state and national school counseling associations.
· Be proactive in assisting students in adapting to their world.
· Be aligned with the goals of the Wake County Public School System and Hunter Elementary School.
