Celebrating Dr. Seuss
We celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday by reading his stories
all week. The kindergarten listened to many books written
by Dr. Seuss. They made a book cover and wrote a book
review about their favorite Dr. Seuss books. They made a
“Cat In The Hat” cat with rhyming words for cat on the hat
and played a math dice game with the Seuss hat theme.
On Friday, the Investiplorers culminated our unit by making
green eggs and jam. It was a good ending to a good week
with good books.
Language
We have been working on identifying a ‘small moment’ in writing. The
Explorers are writing a story about an icicle that they found on the
playground and the Investigators have written a story titled “The Surprise
Worm.” Ask your children about these ‘small moments’. We continue to work
on our lower case letters and are encouraging the children to use them in
their daily activities. We are getting to the end of our phonics books and
have introduced Xx, Yy and Vv. Next week we will add the vowel sound of Uu.
Purim
Purim is coming next week and the classes are getting ready for the joyous
day. They made groggers by tearing masking tape and covering a plastic egg
as a fine motor activity. They have painted and decorated them and they are
ready for the parade. They read two magazines about Purim. Perri Liberty
and Sonya Fischer came in to help the kindergarten make hamantashen. They
were quite yummy.
Hebrew
In the past three weeks we have focused on all the different things which can
be found in a kindergarten from furniture (shulchan-table, Keeseh-chair,
shatiach-rug) to toys (rakevet- train, otto-car, doobie-teddy bear, kubiyot-
blocks, etc.) to everyday tools (misparayim – scissors, eeparon-pencil,
devek – glue, tzvayim-crayons). Even though the amount of new vocabulary in
this unit is very impressive your children amazed me by their ability to
participate in all the activities, understand all the words and even actively
use most. Some of our favorites in this unit were rock, paper, scissors,
shoot in Hebrew and playing our version of musical chairs to the music of a
favorite kids song.
For the 100th day of school the children watched a short DVD from Israel
about a grandmother that has one hundred (meah) cats, cookies and stories and
we made our own poster of her cats.
Lately we started learning about Purim as
the month of Adar started. We are engaging
in super fun and super silly activities – as is
appropriate for this holiday. More details about
Purim will be in the next newsletter.
Do You Have The Time?
The children are working on telling time on the hour and half hour. They are
practicing telling time and drawing the time on the clock. Ask your
child “What time is it?”
