Arielle Derby is thrilled to be in her second year teaching 2nd grade at the
Lerner School! She has a close relationship to Jewish Education: she
attended a Jewish Day School from age 4 to 14, and has taught at two Day
Schools as an adult. She got her undergraduate degree at Smith, and has a
Masters in Elementary Education from Bank Street College. She recently
relocated from New York City, where she was born and raised, and finding
Lerner was like finding a little piece of home. She lives in Carrboro with
her wife, Laurel (a PhD candidate in Anthropology at UNC), and as many
houseplants as she can encourage to bloom. Her favorite thing to do out of
school is hang out on the Weaver Street Lawn and watch the hula-hoopers.
Our classroom is a place of creativity and imagination, learning and
growing, high expectations and constant support. It is my goal that each
child will learn and grow first and foremost as a member of a caring
community; that each child will feel known and understood by peers and the
teacher. 2nd grade is a year of changes, as the students begin the
transition from lower to upper elementary. Throughout the year, I will
underline this transition by encouraging and supporting greater
responsibility for oneself and one’s belongings and school work. In 2nd
grade we work hard, have a lot of fun, think creatively and flexibly, take
responsibility for our behavior, and set expectations for ourselves that we
can meet with support. It’s going to be a fantastic year.
