Besides enjoying surf sessions together, students in the SURF CLUB have "Adopted-A-Beach-Access" at Wrightsville Beach and meet regularly to clean-up and care for this natural resource. Our assigned location is from the SUN SPREE RESORT public parking area (Moore's Inlet) north to Cowrie Lane (about three blocks). The program is directed by the Wrightsville Beach Park and Recreation Dept. as well as the Town of Wrightsville Beach. Other activities include meetings (usually on Thursdays) and social outings (meals, film nights, contests, etc.). See the CALENDAR page for dates and times of Club activities and events. Recently, the SURF CLUB purchased its own DVD player and will now enjoy viewing films regularly during meeting times. Again this holiday season, SURF CLUB members are helping the Wrightsville Beach Longboard Association sponsor a family for Christmas. Students have also adopted a garden area outside of the Laney Arts Building and have agreed to care for it throughout the school year. Do parents need to give special permission for a student to participate? Yes. Surf Club members and their parents should read and sign a Release Form in order to participate in some events (surf outings). This Release Form may be viewed online (see Mr. Boyd's homepage). Also, students should have another release form signed and on file with the school to have their photograph or artwork publicly displayed (website, newsletter, etc.). How much does the new Surf Club sweatshirt cost? This year the price is the same...$18.00, T-shirts are $8.00. See Mr. Boyd to order one now! How does a student help out with surf contests? Usually, members are asked to assist with tabulating the judges' scores during a contest. It is not difficult to learn the procedures and rules, and LANEY student-surfers have been greatly appreciated for their help in the past. |
