About The Teacher

Currently teaching three (3) courses of Ceramics, Mr. Boyd has been at Laney 
High School for over sixteen years.  He is the Chairman of the Arts 
Department, member of the Technology Team and serves as the faculty advisor 
to the SURF CLUB.

Alan M. Boyd is a member of the National Art Education Association, the 
Louise Wells Cameron Art Museum, the North Carolina Art Education 
Association, the Sierra Club, Stanford University Alumni Association, the 
University of California at Santa Barbara Alumni Association, the Cape Fear 
Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, and the Wrightsville Beach Longboard 
Association.

Mission For The Class

Following the guidelines established by the North Carolina Department of 
Public Instruction in the Standard Course of Study, art students will...
   
develop critical and creative thinking skills and perceptual awareness 
necessary for understanding and producing art. (Goal 1)

develop skills necessary for understanding and applying media, techniques 
and 
processes. (Goal 2)

organize the components of a work into a cohesive whole through knowledge of 
organizational principles of design and art elements. (Goal 3)

choose and evaluate a range of subject matter and ideas to communicate 
intended meaning in artworks. (Goal 4)

understand the visual arts in relation to history and cultures. (Goal 5)

reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of their work and the 
work of others. (Goal 6)

perceive connections between visual arts and other disciplines. (Goal 7)

develop an awareness of art as an avocation and profession. (Goal 8)
