Goal 1
Type a one page persuasive paper
-Students will participate in a debate on who is better suited to meet the
needs of society; public organizations vs. private corporations.
-List arguments for and against each of the following issues and what the
proper role of government should be: (students will create in chart form)
· Compulsory school attendance
· Mandatory seat belt laws
· Mandatory drug testing
· Warning labels on alcohol and tobacco products
Goal (2)
-Students will demonstrate knowledge of the petition process by constructing
a petition, gathering signatures, and determining the appropriate body to
receive it.
-Students will interpret the rights guaranteed in the Bill of Rights by
creating a collage of photographs and captions, which reflect freedoms in a
pamphlet.
-Student teams will create and illustrate a brochure to be sent to a foreign
country, which depicts American rights and freedoms guaranteed to all
American citizens.(in class only assignment)
-Students will evaluate the use of volunteerism by conducting a school wide
survey or poster to determine volunteer activities of students and adults.(in
class assignment)
-Students will interview a community volunteer and present the information in
a one page essay.
-Students will survey twenty adults to determine how many actually voted in
the most recent elections. Students will analyze the data based on age,
gender, level of education, and political party membership. Each will
contribute his findings to the class and a bar graph of class findings will
be created to determine who votes and who does not.
-Students will evaluate in a panel discussion the importance to the American
society of paying taxes, making charitable contributions, investing in
savings bonds, working, and saving money. The focus should be in discovering
the link between wise economic decisions and maintaining a government, which
provides a balance in providing services, and permitting individual freedoms.

Goal (3)
-Students are to recall a time or their parents received poor service from a
business. Students should prepare a brief letter to present to the manager
of the company suggesting ways of correcting the employee’s behavior. Have
students speculate the cost of such a suggestion. Students will then write a
persuasive speech to convince the manager that the cost of the investment in
human capital will be worth the expense. The activity may be done with the
scenario of a faster and more expensive production machine showing the
benefits of investing in capital goods.
Goal (4)
-Students will read and label descriptions of life under the various economic
systems. Students will research and give and oral report on a culture using
a traditional economic system, i.e., the Amish, Aborigines of Australia, Ainu
of Japan, tribes in the rain forest of Brazil, etc. Students in the class
will discuss the contrast between our economic system characteristics and
those of the traditional system.
-Students will chose three stocks from the newspaper and follow their
progress for a week to be able to see what kinds of changes can happen to the
price of stock.. In a chart students will list the stock and their findings.

-In a two page paper students will evaluate the impact of federal laws and
how they apply in the
following cases:
· A company manufactures and sells a dangerous toy
· A company makes false statements about its products in a newspaper ad
· A person makes long distance calls using a stolen credit card

environmental factors and the economy by examining and discussing:
· A proposed highway moving into a rural area

-Students working in round robin cooperative learning groups will analyze the
advantages and disadvantages of obeying laws. They will also brainstorm
times when obeying the lay may be unwise. Groups will them contribute their
ideas to a whole class panel discussion.(in class assignment only)
-Students will debate the merits of plea-bargaining in a one page paper.
-The students will conduct research to determine how much of the federal,
state, and local budgets are spent on the correctional institutions on each
level.Students will present this information in a chart with a one page paper
explaining the information.
Goal (9)
-Students will attend a local city council, school board or county commission
meeting. If thus is not practical, the teacher may videotape the proceedings
and use this in the classroom. The focus of attention should be on conflict
resolution and the steps lawmakers used in reaching the decision. Students
should evaluate the ethic, standards, and practical aspects the lawmakers
used in making the decisions.(in class assignment only)

-Students will generate religious, social, scientific, and political
arguments for protecting the environment students will create a pamplet
to illustrate their views.
-Students will research at least three First Amendment cases to determine the
impact
of each on society. They will distinguish the cases in terms of “Free
Exercise Clause” issues or “Establishment Clause” issues

Each team will play the role of entrepreneurs who are creating a product and
opening a business. They are responsible for addressing all aspects of the
production and business aspects. They will present the following to the
class:
A. The product with proof of a demand for it, price properly figures in
terms of cost and supply elements, and reasons you feel the product will be a
success
B. All elements related to the four factors of production
C. A marketing campaign with music and a magazine ad which you feel
would appeal to buyers
D. The business structure with roles, salaries, and all personal issues
you feel are important for addressing human needs
Read The Federalist Papers, numbers 1,2,10,23,39,47,51,70,75, and 78 to
understand the basic arguments of the Federalist and Antifederalist. Then
decide with which philosophy you agree. Join with others of like opinion and
prepare a mock debate using arguments Hamilton and Jefferson would have used
to discuss the proper role of government in society.
Alternative: Students will analyze the meaning of human rights and explain
how it has been used in American foreign policy in a well written essay.
They will determine what measures the government has taken to insure support
the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights and how the current
administration promotes human rights as an aspect of foreign policy.
