Policies and Procedures

Classroom Rules:

1.Follow school rules as listed in the student handbook.

2.Be prepared.  Bring all necessary materials to class everyday.  This 
includes your textbook, notebook, homework assignments, paper, writing 
utensils, class novel, etc.

3.Stay awake and alert with your eyes open and your head off of your desk at 
all times.

4.Eating is not permitted in class.

5.Observe the school dress code policy.  Remove all headgear upon entering 
the building.  See the Laney High School Student Handbook for details on the 
dress code.

6.Conduct all personal business on your own time. (getting a drink, using the 
restroom, calling home, running errands, making appointments, etc.)

7.Respect everyone.  (If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at 
all.)

8.ANY serious offense will be immediately referred to the Dean of students.

9.Be on time.  Be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings.

Detention
Failure to follow these rules will result in a teacher assigned detention.  
Teacher detention is generally 30 minutes.  Detention can be served after 
school on Tuesdays.  If you fail to show up at your arranged time, a phone 
call home will be made and referral to the Dean will be the next step 
necessary.

Substitute Teachers
In the event that I am unable to be here, the expectations for your behavior 
a completion of assignments are not lessened.  You have the chance to show an 
adult that teenagers at Laney are excellent members of society.  ANY 
misbehavior with a substitute will result in three days of detention (30 
minutes per day).

Three-ring binder (1’ minimum)
5 subject dividers
Pens (black, blue, red)
Pencils
3x5 index cards (a container is also required)

Notebook Organization
1-Grammar
2-Vocabulary
3-Literature/Novels
4-Essays
5-Tests/Quizzes

Textbooks
Each student will be issued a Literature book and/or the following:  grammar 
handbook, workbooks, and novels.  These materials will be used daily in 
class.  All books will be returned to class the day of the final exam.  You 
will be responsible for paying for lost or damaged books.  Novels will be 
issued and must be returned or paid for if lost or damaged.

Approximate cost of books if you lose or destroy them:
Literature-$64.09 each
Handbook-$20.00 each
Novels-$15.00 each

Grading Policies:

Assignments
You will have a great deal of work in this class.  You will have short and 
long term assignments.  Writing assignments must be typed or written in black 
ink.  All assignments must include the proper heading in MLA format.  

Tutoring  
I will be available after school for tutoring, test make-up, and detention on 
Tuesdays from 3:45-4:30 PM.  Other times may be available by appointment.  
The academic bus is available for anyone in need of a ride home from tutoring.

Grades will be calculated as follows:

1st nine weeks
15% Midterm
15% Quizzes
30% CW/HW
40% Test

2nd nine weeks
20% Quizzes
35% CW/HW
45% Test
