Syllabus

GEOMETRY SYLLABUS

Mission Statement.  The mission of E. A. Laney High School is to prepare all 
students for the future by striving for excellence in pursuit of a quality 
education.  

Course Description 

Geometry - This course includes logic, geometric proofs and 
constructions, properties of a line, plane and space, parallelism, 
conguencies of line segments, angles and figures, ratio and proportion, 
Pythagorean theorem, introduction of trigonometry, coordinate geometry, 
quadrilaterals and related solids, area and volume relationships, and 
properties of circles and spheres.  Reading and problem solving are 
emphasized.  Real life situations involving geometric principles will 
provide for the practice of geometric skills.  This course has an eighty 
question "end-of-course" state tested exam.

Assessments

Homework. Assigned with each lesson taught.  To be checked daily.
Computer Lab Activities.  Normally 2-3 times per nine week period.
Quizzes.  Normally one per chapter.  
Exams.  One per chapter.  Chapter Exams will be announced.   
Participation.  All students are expected to be active participants. 

*  Chapter Exams and Quizzes - 75% of nine week grade. Exams are weighted 
twice as much as quizzes.  Mid-term Exam is 15% of your 1st nine week 
overall grade.
*  Homework, and computer lab activities - 25% of nine week grade
*  Final Exam - 25% of your total grade.
*  Extra Credit - Opportunities to receive extra credit will be available 
during both nine week marking periods. Please take advantage of these 
opportunities.
*  Note - Make your first effort your best effort.  I do not allow 
exam/quiz "re-takes".  During both nine week marking periods, there will be 
plenty of grading opportunities.  In other words, one to two low grades will 
not have a major effect on your overall grade. 

Grading Scale

A  93% - 100%
B  85% - 92%
C  77% - 84%
D  70% - 76%
E  below 70%

Classroom Rules

-Be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings.
-School name tags will be properly worn in the classroom at all times.
-Bring all needed materials to class.  All work will be done in pencil. 
-Respect others and be polite.
-Respect other people's property.
-Cell phones and ipods are not allowed.  
-Food and drinks are not allowed.
-Class is dismissed by the teacher, not the bell.  

Attendance/Tardiness

-You are expected to be in class unless you have an excused absence.  
Students that have unexcused absences will not receive credit for that day's 
activities (ie homework, quizzes, and exams). 
-"Skipped" classes will be referred to the Dean's Office.     
-Students will be referred to the Dean's Office after three tardies. 

Teacher Availability.  I am available for tutoring after school on Thursday
in room 136.

PRECALCULUS SYLLABUS

Precalculus - Provides an honors-level study of trigonometry, advanced 
functions, analytic geometry, sequences and series, probability, and data 
analysis in preparation for Calculus.  Applications and modeling will be 
included throughout this course of study.    

Assessments

Homework. To be checked daily.
Quizzes.  Normally one per chapter.  
Exams.  Chapter Exams will be announced.  A thorough review will proceed 
each major exam.    
Participation.  All students are expected to be active participants.  
 
*  Homework, Participation, and Projects - 25% of your nine week grade
*  Exams and Quizzes - 75% of your nine week grade.  Exams are weighted

CALCULUS BC SYLLABUS

Mission Statement.  The mission of E. A. Laney High School is to prepare all 
students for the future by striving for excellence in pursuit of a quality 
education.  

Course Description  - Advanced Placement Calculus BC covers all of the topics 
in AP Calculus AB plus parametric, vector, and polar functions.  Euler's 
Method, L'Hopital's Rule, integration by parts and by partial fractions, 
improper integrals, logistic differential equations, polynomial 
aproximations, and series.  At the completion of this college-level course, 
students will have the opportunity to take an AP Exam that is designed, 
administered, and graded by the College Board.  Therefore, the students may 
possibly earn course exemption and/or credit at the college or university of 
their choice.  

Assessments

Homework.  To be checked daily.
Projects.  To be assigned periodically throughout the semester.  Consider 
these as advanced homework assignments.    
Exams.  All exams are announced and outlined in course pacing guide.  Exams 
will cover major topic areas.        
Participation.  All students are expected to be active participants.
