Leitner Bugs Soar! The behavior management model for my class is based on our school’s SOAR behavior goals. SOAR stands for: S - Show self control, O - Operate safely, A – Act responsibly, R – Respect ourselves and others. I reward positive behaviors periodically throughout the day. Children who are good role models for specific behaviors receive Falcon tickets. There is a prize rubric for children to work for a variety of prizes. Students are given the opportunity to change their behavior if it is inappropriate. They are asked to choose to change inappropriate behavior or have their bug moved. If inappropriate behavior continues, their bug is moved. The bugs are paper bugs that fly around a “bug jar”. The jar is number coded according to behavior. Three indicates an excellent day (the bug is flying free). Two means there is room for improvement (the bug is on the lid). One alerts the parent that the child had a difficult day (the bug is in the jar). When a child is moved from a three or two they can work their way back, if their behavior improves. However, parents are made aware that this has occurred. A Falcon ticket is given at the end of the day to students who have not had their bug moved.
