  • Microscope Quiz tomorrow - September 2.
  • Students began the new topic - Chapter 11 - "Populations and Communities".

  • Students took the microscope quiz today.
  • Homework: Finish reviewing Section 1 (Chapter 11 - p. 384) and completing the workbook pages 181-184. This is due September 3.

September 21, 2009

  • Last Day of Summer!
  • Sixth graders received a pocket folder and all the necessary information and forms to complete their special Year Long Tree Project. Please read the information.
  • Today's Homework: Pick out a tree to study and observe it from September through April.
  • Sketch/Draw your tree. ( Color )
  • Look up information about your tree. Use the form in the packet to jot down your facts. The second form is the final, neatly written copied version to include in the project.
  • Lastly, fill in the observation page by the date - September 21.

  • First Day of Autumn!
  • Complete your observations about your tree this afternoon. Enter the necessary information.
  • In class, questions were answered that pertained to the tree project.

September 24, 2009

  • Bring in lots of leaves from different trees. Collect them and place them in a book fo safe keeping. This will help to keep them from curling up. We will need them for a lesson tomorrow.
  • Today we spent time learning about mushrooms and saw the parts up close using our ProScope and the Smart Board.
  • Test will be next week on Wednesday, September 30.

  • Oct. 4th - Observe your tree!!! Don't forget to do that and write down the information on your paper.
  • If you have any tree books at home, please bring them in for future in-class assignments. Thank you.

  • In class the students are researching information about certain leaves and filling in the facts on the leaf anthology papers.
  • There will be a test on October 15.

October 9, 2009

  • Tests were returned. Parents are to sign the test. Students are to bring the signed test in on Monday, Oct. 12. When it is brought in on Monday, the students will receive a 100% under the homework/quiz section of the grade.
  • Homework: Finish writing the rough draft of the letter to our seminarian who is Mr. Lucas Rossi.
  • The students have also written down what they should be studying for the test.
  • They should know or be able to .........
  • label the parts of the leaf
  • label the parts of the cross section of a leaf
  • label the parts of a stem
  • recognize the shape of these leaves - a white oak, yellow poplar, sugar maple, dogwood, and white pine
  • whether a leaf is palmate or pinnate
  • the definitions to foliage, chlorophyll, carotene/zanthophyll and anothocianin (from "Who paints the leaves?"

  • Today I read the book Leaf Man by by Lois Ehlert to the students.
  • I also told them about the book Lost in the Woods by Carl R. Sams II and Jean Stoick. They began the DVD - Lost in the Woods. ( Winner 12 National and International Awards   )

  • We finished the DVD in class today.

October 26, 2009

  • So nice to have so many of my kids back!!!
  • Students received the directions and poster paper for making their Nature Portrait. They may use fresh leaves, acorn caps, straw, flower petals , twigs and whatever creative ideas they may have. Work on this tonight. DO not wait until Tuesday. NO Halloween stuff. Keep the scene with the autumn theme! This is due on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

  • Tests were returned today. Everyone completed the test who had been absent.
  • Students took notes about the various styles of Poet - Tree to help them with their tree project.
  • Nature Portrait due tomorrow.

  • The Nature Portraits were fantastic and creative!

  • Get your paper signed for the Book Fair Readers' Theater. Due tomorrow.

November 4, 2009

  • Practice your Readers' Theater parts. Be thinking about the type of head gear (ears) for the animal parts.
