11/20: Lit: Study for reading quiz on
Chp 10-12 of the Outsiders. Work on your book review due December 1st.
Remember: you can earn 5 extra points by turning this quarter's review in by
11/24. Work to complete your Outsiders folder which is due on 12/4.
Grammar: Worksheet, side #44 only, due on Monday
11/23. I will be gving you a study sheet on Monday; we will decide then if
people are ready for test on verbs on Tuesday 11/24.
Vocab: Begin working on Lesson 7 (cards and Ex
7a, b, c) - this initial work is due on Monday November 30th (yes, that's a
Monday and this is vocabulary, but one class will be at Timberlake on Tuesday
andthe other will be watching The Outsiders).
11/19: Lit - Complete "Advice" worksheet; study for
reading quiz Chapters 8 & 9. You will need to complete Chapters 10 -12 over
the weekend so that you can take the final reading quiz on Monday 11/23.
Grammar: Review Ex 6 & 7 p. 428-429; ex 19 p. 418; read
Active/Passive Voice p. 419 and do all exercises 20 and 21 on p. 420.
Forms Due: DC Commitment due Friday 11/20; Timberlake
Farm forms and money due Monday 11/23 (for this trip we need drivers!)
11/17: Complete grammar exercises for tomorrow. Study
vocabulary from Lesson 6 for test on Thursday. We will have a reading quiz on
Outsiders Chapters 8 & 9 on Friday.
11/16: Grammar: p. 414 Ex 13 & 14 odds only; p. 416 Ex
15, 16, 17 odds only. Both vocab worksheets due tomorrow - vocab test moved to
Thursday. Try to finish reading through Chapter 9 in Outsiders by Friday.
11/13: Lit: Begin reading Chapter 9 to the end of
the Outsiders; work to finish the library book you selected for your next
review.
Vocabulary: Worksheet to review for the test we
will have on Tuesday 11/17.
Grammar: Writers Choice p. 426-427 Review Ex 1-4
evens only.
11/12: Finish the Outsiders reading assignment if
you have not done so; complete "Dilemmas" worksheet and do :Are You a Hero?"
Grammar: Worksheet 6.8 Basic Sentence Patterns on 5
Basic Patterns with Complements.
Vocabulary: Complete worksheet we started in class if
you did not finish it.
11/11: Grammar: we are working on the different
complements - DO, IO, OC, PN, PA; complete worksheet "Additional Work on
Complements" - 8S I have these sheets of yours; 8W you need to complete.
11/4: Over the long weekend your should read through
Chapter 8 of The Outsiders; also, be reading your library book that you
checked out for your next book review as it will be due by the end of the
month. Voc cards for Lesson 6 and Ex 6a, b, c will be due on Thursday 11/12.
11/3: Field trip to Bishop tomorrow! You may wear
appropriate fitting jeans, a collared shirt or acceptable T-shirt (not too
tight, no inappropriate logos), and either tennis shoes or loafer style shoes.
See you tomorrow ready to go at 9. Remember lunch is provided.

11/2: Vocab Lesson 5 Test tomorrow! Study!! Grammar: p.
409 Ex 7 & 8 - due tomorrow; Everyone is to have read to the end of Chapter 4
in The Outsiders by tomorrow.
10/28: Vocab: Lesson 5 worksheet due Monday - 8S: you
may not have this sheet; if you do not, I will give it to you on Monday and
you can have 10 or 15 minutes to complete in class. Vocab Test 5 on Tuesday
11/3; Grammar p. 408 Ex 7 & 8 due Monday; Lit - Finish reading through Chapter
4 by Monday; collage on "tuff" stuff of 2009 due Thursday. Remember
- Permission slip to Bishop is due on Monday!
10/27: Finish reading through first two chapters of The
Outsiders if you have not already done so; complete journal entry #1 and
worksheet on characters' traits if you did not finish either - or both! - in
class. Make sure you are done with grammar ex 5 & 6 p. 406 for tomorrow!
10/26: Read first two chapters of The Outsiders;
note the difference between tough and tuff. Remember to bring in a shoebox and
memorabilia for the Offrendas we are making on Friday. Vocab cards and ex 5a,
b, and c will be due on Thursday 10/29. Grammar exer 5 & 6 p. 406 will be due
on Wednesday.
10/22: Vocab Test Lesson 4 on Friday; Grammar Ex 3 & 4
p. 404 in Lesson 10
10/20: Grammar: Test tomorrow on nouns and punctuation;
vocab Lesson 4 test Friday.
10/19: Grammar: 8W - Ex 11 and 12 p. 392, evens
only - due Wednesday; test on Lesson 9 Nouns - sections 9.4, 9.5., 9.6 and
Lesson 20 punctuation.
Vocab: Worksheet Lesson 4; we will check this and
ex 4a, b and c in class tomorrow (Tuesday).
10/14: Vocab: Cards and ex 4a, b and c will be due at
the end of class Thursday 10/15 - you will have approximately 15 minutes to
work on this work if you do not finish at home tonight.
Lit: Shoe assignment is due. We will complete discussion
of "The Kid" story Thursday.
Grammar: Ex. 10 p. 390
10/13: Vocab: Work to complete cards for Lesson 4
words and roots.
Lit: Shoe representation and reflection (see
10/12 Lit entry below) due on Thursday. We will complete our discussion of
"The Kid" Thursday as well.
If you have your own copy of The Outsiders you
might want to dig it out now; if you do not own a copy, don't worry. I will
provide books in class.
10/12: Study for vocab test Lesson 3 - test
tomorrow!
Lit: Complete "The Kid Noday Could Handle" p.
146-156 if you have not done so and answer the questions at the end of the
story. Drawn on or cut out and glue to a piece of computer paper (use
landscape lay out) a shoe or piece of footwear that represents you or has
special significance to you. Write 3 or 4 sentences about what this "shoe"
means to you. Do not put your name on the paper directly; write your name and
number on a post-it and stick it to your "shoe." Due Thursday 10/15.
10/9: Lit - 8W: You were to read "Thank You M'am" by
Langston Hughes and answer the questions at the end of the story.
Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to see that you had done the questions,
so bring your work to class on Monday. Both 8S and 8W: Read "The Kid Nobody
Could Handle" by Kurt Vonnegut p. 146 to 156; answer the questions that follow
so we can discuss the story and compare it to "Thank You M'am". Be thinking
about the symbolic meaning of footwear in these 2 stories and what the shoes
mean to Roger and the boots to Jim. What footwear has special meaning for you?
Grammar: Review exercises 11 & 12 p. 625 (you should
have done these exercises already - we just haven't had a chance to go over
them in class).
Voc: Test on Lesson 3 Tuesday October 13th.
10/1: Note: Due date of book review has been changed to
Friday October 9th.
9/30: Lit - Test on "Flowers" tomorrow. We will go to
the library during lit class so we will work the test around our visit there.
9/29: Grammar: Ex 5 & 6 p. 606 due 9/30; Lit - study for
"Flowers for Algernon" test we will have on Thursday.
9/28: Lit - Work to complete "Flowers for Algernon" and
answer all questions at the end of the story, including Literary Elements; Voc
- cards and Ex 3a, b and c due tomorrow; Grammar - complete the last 2 pages
of the packet I gave you on semicolons and colons. If you missed class today
we did p. 608 ex 7 & 8 in the text book in class.
9/25: Lit - Read in "Flowers for Algernon" pp. 125 -
134. Voc: Due Tuesday - Lesson 3 cards and Ex 3a, b, c; Grammar: Complete
first two pages of punctuation packet - front and back - for correction in
class on Monday. This is a review.
9/22: Study for Voc Test tomorrow. Grammar Review Ex
1,2,3 and 4, evens only for all 4 due tomorrow. Lit: Continue reading first
section of "Flowers for Algernon" up through p. 123. Answer questions #1 - 6
on page 124 and do Literary Elements - Irony (2 questions). Due Thursday 9/24.
9/21: Voc - Special Notice!! Test on Lesson 2
has been moved to Wednesday 9/23. Grammar: Review Ex 1, 2, 3 and 4 Evens
only p. 620 and 621. Lit: Continue reading "Flowers for Algernon" through the
last entry in March (Progress Reports 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8). Remember to bring in
a shoe box for an upcoming ArtWorks! project - due 10/5. Also, book review is
due 10/5.
9/17: Bring voc monologue and grammar book to language
class; lit test on "from I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" tomorrow - Friday.
9/16: Voc: p. 16 #2 choose one type of person listed in
choices a, b, c, d and write 5 lines of dialogue as if you were the type of
person you choose.
9/15: Complete reading essay from "I Know Why the Caged
Bird Sings" if we do not finish in class on Tuesday. Answer the questions on
p. 207 #1-10 and Literary Elements #1 & 2. We will go over the answers to
these questions Wednesday or Thursday so you will feel comfortable taking a
short test on Friday. If you did not turn in a draft of either your memoir or
related poem, do so now! They were due last Friday.
Voc: Worksheet #2 for Lesson 2 due on 9/17.
9/10: Grammar: Mixed Review Ex 12 p. 378; review Chapter
8 for test on Monday 9/14; Voc cards and Ex 2a, b and c due Tuesday 9/15.
9/8: Lit: Bring typed edition of memoir and poem to
class tomorrow! Vocab: Cards and Ex 2a, b and c due on 9/15 (next Tuesday);
see entry below for Grammar assignment that is due tomorrow.
9/4: Grammar: Ex. 11 & 12 p. 370 and Review Ex 11 p.
377; Vocab: we will begin a new lesson on Tuesday. Lit: Use today's discussion
in author circles to prepare typed edition of your memoir. Remember to double
space. If you did not present a poem that you liked from Bronx Masquerade, you
will need to do that on Tuesday so we can finish with that book. After the
ropes trip we will discuss Code Talkers.
9/3: All text books must be covered by tomorrow. Bring a
revision of your memoir for author circles. Grammar: assignment given below on
9/2 is due tomorrow.
9/2: Voc: Test tomorrow! We will review your answers on
worksheet before test. Grammar: (Due Fri 9/4) Ex 7 #11-20 p. 366 and Ex 9 & 10
p. 368; Lit: we will go to the library tomorrow (Thurs) so continue to work on
revision of draft of memoir - bring to class on Friday 9/4.
9/1: Lit: Use peer comments to revise and expand
memoir; Voc: Complete 2nd worksheet for review for Thursday's test. Grammar
Ex 4 & 5 due tomorrow.
8/31: Lit: Review List of Ideas for Memoirists
and create a new draft or finish one you started. Bring to class tomorrow for
peer review (you may begin with poem if you would rather).
Lang: Grammar Ex 4 p.362 and Ex 5 p. 364 (write
simple subject and simple predicate only for each sentence) Voc Ex 1a,
b and c due in class tomorrow!
8/28: Lit: Due on Monday 8/31 - list of potential
topics for memoir/poem (a good place for this is at the back of your Day Book
- I will be checking to see if you have started an idea bank); beginning of
draft of your memoir. You need to draft a page to a page and a half in your
Day Book so we can begin Peer Revision on Monday.
Begin reviewing Code Talkers - we will have a
test on this book soon.
8/27: Voc: Finish making notecards for Lesson 1
Roots and Key Words; complete worksheet. Exercises 1 A, B, and C will be due
on Tuesday 9/1; test on Lesson 1 words will be on Thursday 9/3.
Lit: Skim through Bronx Masquerade and choose a favorite
memoir and poem that you found especially touching. Mark this section so you
can share your thoughts about it in class tomorrow. Jot down ideas from your
own life/experiences about which you can write a memoir and poem at the back
of your Day Book. You can begin your draft of the memoir in the Day Book as
well.
8/24/09: Remember to bring a marble composition book to
class to use as your day book in language and literature; you will also need
to bring one to religion to get started on your journal there. Don't forget to
bring your cross to religion tomorrow!
