Learning Support Services
Learning Support is available to students at OLM in grades K-8. Early intervention is provided to students in grade K-3 as needed. Students in grades 4-8 are served if there is a documented special need. An accommodation plan is put into place for any student with a documented need. Upon writing an accommodation plan, the decision will be made as to how the student will receive services from Learning Support. Depending upon the needs of the student, services are provided though Direct Instruction which consists of individual or small group sessions with the Learning Support teacher, through Inclusion which takes place in the classroom setting where the LS teacher works with the student, or through Consultation where the LS teacher consults with the classroom teacher. Students in Grades K-5 are primarily served though Direct Instruction. Direct instruction utilizes multisensory instruction including the Orton-Gillingham method for reading, spelling, writing and vocabulary. Math is also addressed through mutisensory techniques. Students in Grades 6-8 are served primarily through Consultation with Inclusive services provided when needed. Early intervention is provided for students in Grades K-3 the areas of reading and/or math upon the recommendation of the classroom teacher and consent of the parent. Students in the 4th grade and above are seen by Learning Support only if there is a documented reason such as a Learning Disability in reading, written language, math, or the presence of another disorder such as CAPD or ADD/ADHD that interferes with learning in the classroom. In addition, the Learning Support room is available at select times during the school day for students with records on file in the Learning Support room who need accommodations such as extended time to complete assignments and tests.
