How can I help my child at home with reading and comprehension? *Choose an article in the newspaper, read it, and summarize it in a few sentences; * Visit the library and choose two storybooks or novels on the same topic by different authors, read the books, identify the main characters, list the major events in sequence, and describe ways in which the two books are similar and different. * Write a letter to one of the characters in the books they have read *Ask your child what the author is trying to tell you in this book? *Ask your child if any of the characters are like other characters you have read about *Ask your child what the most important part of the story was. *Which part of the story best describes the setting? *****MOST IMPORTANT: LET YOUR CHILD SEE YOU READING TOO. MODEL READING AND THEY WILL SEE HOW IMPORTANT IT REALLY IS! How can I help my child succeed in math? *Become familiar with the math objectives for your child's grade. *Talk to your child's teacher about what objectives they are struggling with. *Practice math facts using flash cards *Purchase educational games: THEY REALLY LEARN A LOT FROM THESE AND THEY DON'T EVEN REALIZE IT! *Do fun math-related activites at home. *Point out math in everyday living (shopping, newspapers, magazines,sports, cooking, etc.) *Check your child's math homework and ask them how they solved the problems. Communicating with math is the key to understanding the concepts! *Always make math FUN! Show them that you are enthused, and they will quickly catch on! How do you choose spelling words for each week? *Generally the regular spelling words will come from the fourth grade reading series that we use. The bonus words come from another area of the curriculum, and are words that we are using frequently in class. What is the grading scale at Parsley? Here at Parsley we follow the New Hanover County 7 Point Grading Scale as follows: *93-100 A *85-92 B *77-84 C *70-77 D *Below 70 F Do I have to bring a snack to school? Yes, please come with a snack to enjoy in the morning hours. What time does my class go to lunch? We go to lunch at 11:20, Table 5 Is it okay to send a special snack on my child's birthday. Yes, as long as you have enough for the whole class. |
