Thank you for volunteering to present at the Grade Three Career Days. We have
a very
full schedule.

Fun Day is coming in June. It truly is a fun day and a highlight for the
kids! Mrs.
Deaton is asking for volunteers for this event. If you can help, please
contact Mrs.
Deaton at ldeaton@nhcs.net or Jennifer Bradstreet at
bradstreet.jennifer@gmail.com.
The times are 8:45-11 for 3rd-5th and 12:00-2:15 for Kindergarten-2nd grade
on Friday
June 5th and if it rains it will be on Monday June 8th. Volunteers are also
needed for
set up and take down. Thank you so much for your help.

Our end of the year celebration will be on the last day of school, June 10th,
from 11:00-12:00.

Our class is set to be part of Summerfest 2009. A letter about this was sent
home
in your child's folder last week. The letter will contain a classroom
identification number for students in our class. Please register your child
by going to www.letterpals.org,
click on the Parents Sign Up tab, and enter the requested information along
with the
classroom identification number sent home this week. You can register at home
between
now and June 22.

If your male student would like to participate in Benny Moss Basketball camp
this summer, please stop by the office to pick up a flyer.

Check the calendar page for more important dates.

Reading:
We will begin a novel study. Students will be reading either Stone Fox or
Maniac Magee.

In the interest of saving paper and ink, we will no longer print a TOPS
report for
every AR quiz taken. Rather, a weekly report of AR tests, book levels, and
scores
will be sent home. At a glance, you will see all your child's AR information
for the
week. Students have less than two weeks to reach their goals.

Math:
We will work on Accelerated Math and Super Stars.

Even though the weather is warmer and the end of the year feels closer,
PLEASE don't
neglect your memorization of math facts. Students who had their math facts
memorized
clearly had an easier time with the EOGs and with the complex questions that
were
asked on the test. Catching up and keeping up with those skills will be
critical as
your child prepares for 4th grade!

Science:
Our worms have been observed placed into our compost bags. It will be
interesting to
see how the organic matter in these bags is changed into rich soil. This week
we will
learn about the composition of soil and learn more about the characteristics
of each
soil type (sand, clay and humus). If there are any parents who have an
expertise in
these areas, please let me know :)

May 18 - May 22

Thank you for going the extra mile in helping prepare your child for the End-
of-Grade
tests. We had perfect attendance and no tardies. This made the tests less
stressful
for the children - thank you! Note that scores for these tests will be sent
home with
report cards at the end of the year.

Be sure to check out the Patriot Kids Blog. This is where you will find

Monday, March 16th.

Students enjoyed our Read Across America observance. We explored a number of
Dr. Seuss' books,
practiced our reading fluency, created words from Seuss word families,
graphed shoe styles,
compared Seuss books... Our guest reader last Monday was Mayor Saffo
himself! The gallery page
of this website has a couple of pictures from the celebration.

Reading: Our new reading theme is "Animal Habitats". During the next several
weeks, we will
read a variety of fiction and non-fiction selections about animal habitats.
Our reading strategy from now until March 11 will be evaluation. Our reading
skills will focus
on fact and opinion, making generalizations, and topic, main idea, supporting
details. Word
study will include vowel +/r/ sound, forms of the verb "be", syllabication,
and homographs.
After March 11, we will work on summarizing, comparing and contrasting,
sequence of events, and
skim/scan. In addition to our selection, we will learn about reading a
magazine article. Our
word study will include word endings -ed and -ing, changing y to i and
doubling consonant
spelling rules, multiple meaning words, and synonyms.
Small groups continue to work with concepts from the mid-year reading
assessment: connections,
cognition, integration, and evaluation.

Writing: We will learn about helping verbs and will write a poem.

Math: Our chapter 25 assessment is scheduled for March 9th. During the rest
of the week, we
will learn how to add and subtract fractions. We will also learn how to
reduce a fraction to
its simplest form. Please watch for a Fractions Parent Letter in the Parsley
folder on Monday.
Automatic recall of multiplication facts will be a great help when students
are comparing
fractions and reducing fractions! Please help your child practice his/her
multiplication facts.

Science: Our unit is "Objects in the Sky: Earth, Moon, and Stars". Please
note the moon
calendar sent home in your child's Parsley folder. Students are asked to
spend 5 minutes each
evening observing the moon and recording its appearance on their moon
calendars. Note not only
the shape of the moon, but also its location in the sky. Students will
continue their moon
observance for the next month (including weekend evenings). Regular
recording on the calendar
will help your child see a pattern in moon changes.

March 2-11

Thank you for attending Student-led Conferences last week. The students were
very proud to
share their accomplishments! If you have not already done so, please sign and
return a copy of
your child's interim report. This Friday, March 6, has been designated as
our make-up snow day.
Students will have a half day of school and will be dismissed at noon.

Parsley will celebrate Read Across America on March 2. Since March 2 is Dr.
Seuss' birthday, he
will be our featured author for the day. I invite students to bring in any
Dr. Seuss books that
you might have at home. On March 5, we will have a school wide vote for our
favorite Dr. Seuss
book. On Friday, March 6th, students are invited to dress as their favorite
Dr. Seuss
character. (Remember the dress code though - no hats.)

Writing: We will learn about taking notes and will finish a recent personal
narrative.

Math: We will finish with ordering fractions and will learn about mixed
numbers this week. Our
chapter 25 assessment is scheduled for March 9th. Students are discovering
that automatic
recall of their multiplication facts is a great help when they are comparing
fractions! Please
help your child practice his/her multiplication facts.

February 23-27

Plan to join us in the classroom on Monday, February 23 from 6:00-7:00 pm for
our second Student-
led Conferences. Interim Reports will be sent home on Wednesday, February
25. Friday, March 6,
originally scheduled as a teacher workday, has been designated as our make-up
snow day. Students
will have school and will be dismissed at noon on March 6.

Parsley will celebrate Read Across America on March 2. Since March 2 is Dr.
Seuss' birthday, he
will be our featured author for the day. I invite students to bring in any

you might have at home. On March 5, we will have a school wide vote for our
favorite Dr. Seuss
book. On Friday, March 6th, students are invited to dress as their favorite
Dr. Seuss
character. (Remember the dress code though - no hats.)

Reminder regarding absences - we do need a written excuse for documentation
of excused
absences.

Reading: We continue to review many of the areas that we have been working on
these past 4
weeks- monitoring and clarifying while reading, story structure, writer’s
craft (character’s perspective), reading for genre (interviews), and
information and study
skills (using charts, tables, graphs, encyclopedias and thesaurus). Our word
study will review homophones, and prefixes un-, bi-, dis-, mis-, and non-.
Our writing focus will be on past time and future time and writing dialogue.
We will also
conference about and review the writing process for personal narratives.

Math: We will begin our study of fractions. We start by understanding that a
fraction is less
than a whole. In fact, it is parts of a total whole: 1/2 is one part of the
2 total parts.
3/4 is 3 of the 4 total parts....

Social Studies: Students did a great job researching and creating biocubes on
famous Americans.
They are eager to show you their cubes, as well as their treasure island
projects, at student
led conferences.

Science: Our next unit is "Objects in the Sky". We will be learning about
the earth/moon/sky
system. Our study will include the motions of the earth and moon. Start
talking about and
observing the moon at various times of the night and day!

include everyone.
A class list was sent home in Parsley folders on February 6th. We will also
make gift bags for
the children at Yahweh Center. Donations for the gift bags can be brought to
school anytime
this week. Donations can be hygiene items, craft items, art supplies,
candy... thank you!

Note the date, February 23. We will have student led conferences that night.
Check the calendar
page for additional upcoming events.

Students have completed a mid-year writing assessment. This assessment
required students to
respond to an on demand writing prompt. A copy of your child's score sheet
and writing will be
sent home this week.

Students have also completed their NHCS mid-year reading and math
assessments. We are awaiting
scores for these assessments.

Reading: We will be reading "The Garden of Abdul Gasazi" this week. It is
another great book
written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg. We'll work with story
structure, monitoring and
clarifying, and noting detail. Word work and spelling will include
homophones. Word work will
also include prefixes (un-, bi-, dis-, mis-, and non-). Skills will include
using a
thesaurus, using charts/tables/graphs, and reading the genre of interviews.

Our writing task will be to write dialogue and appropriately use dialogue
related punctuation.
We will also study past and future tense verbs.

Students are aware of their new AR goals and reading levels.

Math: We have been reviewing telling time. This has taken longer than
anticipated. We will
spend one more day on telling time, then will launch into calculating elapsed
time. Please take
note of your child's ability to tell time using both analog and digital
clocks. Also talk about
elapsed time in your daily activities: Dinner is in 30 minutes, what time
will that be? It
takes 15 minutes to get to practice, we have to be there at 4:00, what time
do we have to
leave? We walked into the store at 5:30 and left at 6:11, how long were we
in the store?

verbs and
subject/verb agreement.

Students will take a STAR test this week. New AR goals will be sent home
after all students
have taken the STAR test.

In math we will review second nine week skills:
-measuring mass, weight, and temperature (Students have learned the
following benchmarks to
help them estimate the correct unit of measurement: ounce = slice of bread,
pound = loaf of
bread (16 ounces/pound), gram = paper clip, kilogram = textbook (1000
grams/kilogram). Third
graders are not expected to convert between metric and customary forms of
measurement. However,
they will definitely convert within customary and within metric systems.
Students should use
a "T table" as a tool for this conversion.)
-calculating permutations and combinations (Students should use a "tree map"

Reading - This week and next week we will read one of Tomie de Paola's many
books: The
Mysterious Giant of Barletta. We will continue to explore fantasy vs.
realism. We will
study non-fiction skills related to following written directions, reading
magazine articles,
choosing the correct dictionary definition, and using an atlas. Our word
study skills will
include words with "vowel + /r/" sounds, -er and - est endings, comma use
for direct address,
and identifying verbs. In writing, we will work on thank you notes and will
practice writing a
personal narrative.

Math - We will be measuring weight and mass using pounds and ounces, grams
and kilograms.
Students will learn the following benchmarks to help them estimate the
correct unit of
measurement: ounce = slice of bread, pound = loaf of bread (16
ounces/pound), gram = paper clip,

skill.

Science/Social - We continue to collect seeds from every day life. As you
eat fruits or notice
other plant seeds in the coming weeks, please bring the seeds to school.
This week we are
learning about plant parts, seed germination, and pollination. Next week we
will learn about
presidential inaugurations.

1/12/2008
Welcome back!

Thank you to our parents who assisted with the winter party: Mr. and Mrs.
Christianson, Mrs.
Sharbaugh, Mr. Pate, Mr. and Mrs. Peterman, Mrs. King, and Mrs.
Pakulniewicz. Thank you also to
Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Woods for assisting with our Sweden/Lucia Day
instruction. Your presence
made these days more enjoyable for all the students:)

Thank you for bringing gently used (or even new) books for our grade 3
community service
project! Mrs. Tobin delivered the books to enthusiastic recipients at Winter
Park Elementary.

Thank you also for donating books from the book fair wish list. These books
have been added to
our classroom library for student use. Several of these books are Newbery
Award recipients.

Also - our class has been participating in Scholastic Book's "Classrooms
that Care" project.
Under this program, our students simply read 100 books, tell Scholastic that
we have read them,
and Scholastic donates 100 books to needy schools. Our class has read well
over 100 books and
Scholastic has donated 100 new books on our behalf!

There are several important dates to make note of. The first of these is
Parsley Night at the
Wilmington SeaDawgs game on January 10. Please check the calendar page for
more dates. Also
check out our gallery page - a few photos have been added.

CONGRATULATIONS to Alex, Ana, Sara, Price, Tomie, and Zach! They read at
least one book from
every section of their Readers' Wheel. Our Readers' Wheels challenge
students to read from a
variety of genres and award winning books.

Our schedule has been changed. We now study writing before lunch and study
math after
lunch.

Third grade will begin another round of the Readers Wheel after Winter
Break. We will simply
start over using the same reader's wheel with the same genres.
A link to the Reader's Wheel can be found on Ms. Bailey or Ms. Tobin's
websites.

Reading - This week we will read a student favorite: Dogzilla by Dav
Pilkey. We will learn
about fantasy vs. realism, illustrator's craft (collage) and writer's craft
(humor). We will
explore the non-fiction skills of reading diagrams, organizing text, reading
newspapers, and
solving problems. Our word study skills will include words with "ou"
and "aw" (as in loud and
lawn), plurals with nouns ending in f or fe, using context clues to discern
meaning, and
possessive nouns. We will work on journal entries in writing.

Math - We will continue our study of division this week. We will be
applying division to
algebraic equations. We will begin measuring temperature using Celsius and
Fahrenheit
thermometers. Students will use "the hand" to help them reference relative
temperature. When
finished with temperature, we will explore weight and mass (next week).

We will also continue our almost daily 1 minute multiplication facts quiz.
Students begin with
their x2's, and move on to successive numbers as they pass each level.

Keep working on basic addition and subtraction facts. Please go over AM TOPS

Please take note of your child's ability to tell time using analog and
digital clocks. It will
help your child a great deal if s/he has a solid grasp of this second grade
skill.

Science - Our plants (Wisconsin Fast Plants) were sent home during break.
Hopefully, you had a
chance to cross pollinate and observe these plants. If your plants produced
seeds, please bring
the seed pods to school. As part of this unit, we would like to collect
seeds from every day
life. As you eat fruits or notice other plant seeds in the coming weeks,
please bring the seeds
to school. This week we will study freeze dried bees up close. We will
learn about the parts of
a bee's body.

comes from Ms. Youmans. We are encouraging all students to study this list
of definitions in
preparation for a "Word Masters" competition in December. Students will be
using these words to
complete analogies. As you study these words with your child, try to make
connections between
these words and other words. Try to create analogies for the words.

Parsley's Student Council sponsored the Friends Feeding Friends Food Drive.
All donated food was
delivered to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Thank you for donating to the

Language Arts - This week we will learn about similes and outlining. We
will learn more about
special plural nouns and dictionary definitions. Students have been writing
news articles about
a holiday or celebration. Toward the end of this week and into next week,
we will review all of
the concepts we have been studying during our "Traditions" theme. Review
topics include
author's viewpoint, categorizing and classifying, noting details, main ideas
with supporting
details, compound words, various forms of plurals, contractions, word
families, dictionary guide
words and definitions, rhyming words, and proper nouns.

All students are challenged to complete their Readers Wheel before Winter

will apply the concept to word problems, take our chapter test, and preview
division through
missing factors in a number sentence. Next week (12/8-12/12) we will begin
to learn about
division. We will do this with a hands on exploration of distributing the
product into
factors.
We continue our almost daily 1 minute multiplication
facts quiz. Students begin with their x2's, and move on to successive
numbers as they pass each
level. Three fourths of the class has already passed their x2's and has
moved on to 3, 4, or 5!

Continue to work on basic addition and subtraction facts. The goal is to be
able to answer at
least 80% correct on a 100 item five minute test. Please go over AM TOPS
reports and graded
math assignments with your child. Watch for items missed and ask your

variety of poems
and poetry vocabulary. They will learn about a poet and write their own
poems. We will also
learn about similes, metaphors, and prefixes (un-, non-, dis-).

Math - We continue to review graph making and graph interpreting skills. We
are learning about
ordered pairs and finding coordinates on a grid. When working with ordered
pairs it is helpful
to remember that you always start at zero, counting across, then up. The
first number in the
pair is the across number and the second number in the pair is the up number
on the grid. (We
say to start at the airport terminal, go across the runway, then up in the
air.) We will test
on our graphing unit on 10/16.

Parsley's Fall Festival is scheduled for Saturday, October 25. This is a
fun
(and fundraising)
event for all students and friends of Parsley. A highlight of this event is
the raffling of
class buckets. Each class chooses a theme and puts together a bucket around
that theme. OUR
BUCKET THEME IS “FAMILY FUN NIGHT”. Be creative! This can be anything that
families like to do
together... a family movie, board games, restaurant gift certificates, a
night out doing
something they enjoy doing together or something new... Donations for our
class bucket can be
brought to the classroom at any time – thank you!! Thank you to Ms.
Hedgepeth
and Ms. Peterman
for coordinating our bucket. (We have already received tickets to Dawgs
games and Carvel gift
certificates - thanks!)

Mark your calendars for Monday, October 13. There will be a brief PTA
meeting, and then Proud
Patriot Night. Third Grade Curriculum Night is being rescheduled. Also,
mark
your calendars for
October 23. This will be our "Tarheels Go Walking" fieldtrip. All 3rd
grade
students in New
Hanover County Schools take this fieldtrip. This is an opportunity for us
to
learn about
several historical sites in Wilmington, as well as to learn more about our
local government. A
permission slip for this was sent home on October 6.

Reading and math tests are sent home after we have had opportunity to
reteach
the skills.
Please sign and return all tests to school.

We are currently reviewing all previously learned reading strategies and
reading skills
instruction. We are reviewing the strategies of making inferences, sequence
of events,and
cause/effect. We are reviewing skills related to base words, parts of a
book, syllabication,
inflected endings, short vowel spelling, vowel-consonant-e spelling,
dictionary use, complete
sentences, types of sentences, comma use, and capitalization. We will have
a
theme skills
review test on October 9. This review test will be a good opportunity for
students to bring up
previous reading test scores.

Our math instruction has focused on rounding. A rounding letter was sent
home in Parsley
folders on 9/25. Memorizing and practicing the "4 or less, go home and
rest... 5 or more, go
home and score" strategy will help students as we begin rounding to the
thousands place. We
will be reviewing our graph making and graph interpreting skills this coming
week.
Continue to work on basic addition and subtraction facts. The goal is to be
able to answer at
least 80% correct on a 100 item five minute test.

You have started to see Accelerated Math TOPS reports come home. See the
Accelerated
Reading/Accelerated Math page on this website for more information on
Accelerated Math (AM).

Our science unit is exploring kinds of joints and how those joints function.
We will
begin studying our branches of government and electoral system in Social
Studies. Start
bringing in any candidate information that arrives in your mail.

Remember to join Parsley's PTA. Our PTA does SO MUCH for our children! It
provides a
great deal of academic support and provides many educational opportunities
that simply wouldn't
otherwise be available.

Be sure to sign in at Parsley's office EVERYTIME you come to the classroom
after 8:00am - even
if it is to quickly drop something off. In fact, it is best to drop an item
off in the office
and the office staff will make sure we receive it in the classroom. The
sign
in policy is for
the safety of all students. If you are picking your child up at the fence
after school, please
indicate that your child is a walker. Car riders will be walked to the car
pick up area near
the front entrance.

Check the calendar page for upcoming dates. Thank you for checking your
child's green calendar
each day, and for helping to see that they are reading and doing homework.

Thank you to all who attended the volunteer meeting on 9/18 and to all who
volunteer at
Parsley. Parent volunteers enrich each child's learning experience! Thank
you to Ms.
Christianson who will serve as our roomparent, and to Ms. King who will
serve
with her. Thank
you to Ms. Hedgepeth who will coordinate our Fall Festival bucket and Ms.

Now for the NewsFlash:

We will brief meeting on Thursday, Sept. 18 at 2:45 in our classroom for
anyone who would like
to volunteer in various ways (tutoring, recess, clerical, room parent, fall
festival bucket...)
We are fortunate to have several parents who have volunteered. We will meet
on Thursday to
schedule what works best for all of you. If you can't attend Wednesday, but
would like to
volunteer, please send an email. Thank you!!!

Two letters were sent home last week. One of them included information (and
vocabulary) for our
current math studies. The other letter had information about Accelerated
Reader, including your
child's reading range (ZPD) and AR goal for this nine week grading period.

We have concluded all of our NC Grade Three Pretests. The students worked
very hard on these
tests and quickly caught on to the art of bubbling! The state has not
released information on
when the test results will be known. Starting 9/23, we will be
administering
the Cognitive
Abilities Test (CoGAT).

We took our first spelling test and reading skills test last week. Please
sign and return all
tests to school. The graded spelling test will come home on 9/15. We will
be reteaching the
reading skills as needed. Your child's skills test will be sent home after
we have had
opportunity to reteach the skills.

Our language arts instruction this week will focus on reading strategies,
particularly "monitoring and clarifying" and " making inferences". Our
skills
instruction will
focus on syllabication, multiple meaning words, kinds of sentences, and more
short vowels.

Our math instruction has reviewed place value and fact families. We have
learned about
expanded, word, and standard form - three ways to describe numbers. We have
introduced the
addition properties of identity, order, and grouping. We will review place
value this week,
take our chapter 2 test, review greater and less than, and learn about
ordering numbers. PLEASE
work on basic addition and subtracton facts. The goal is to be able to
answer 100 addition or
subtraction facts in 5 minutes or less.

We began our study of the skeletal system last week.

Please remember to join Parsley's PTA. Our PTA does SO MUCH for our
children! It provides a
great deal of academic support and provides many educational opportunities
that simply wouldn't

Thank you for sharing snack with the class! I've been asked to remind all
parents of the
district policy which requires that all food brought into the classroom
be "store bought". The
policy does not allow homemade food stuffs to be brought to the classroom.

We started our study of the skeletal system this week. We began by trying
to discern how many bones might be in our bodies. Hmmm... I wonder how many
there really are.

We have concluded all of our NC Grade Three Pretests. The students worked
very hard on these tests and quickly caught on to the art of bubbling! The
state has not yet released information on when the test results will be
known. In about two weeks we will be administering the Cognitive Abilities
Test
(CoGAT).

Our language arts instruction has focused on reading strategies,
particularly "making predictions". We have also focused on cause and effect,
making complete sentences, short vowel sounds, base words, alphabetizing,
and simply learning our reading center procedures.

Our math instruction has reviewed place value and fact families. We have
learned about expanded, word, and standard form - three ways to describe
numbers. We have introduced the addition properties of identity, order, and

I look forward to our testing calendar settling down. When this happens, I
also look forward to making volunteer contacts :)

Our second week is under way!
This week includes three mornings of grade 3 pre-testing. We will move our
reading and math studies to the afternoon to accomodate the testing.

Please note this information form the cafeteria: The cafeteria is no longer
able to create "master accounts" for multiple children in one family due to
our new computer program. When sending one check for multiple children,
please specify if you want it divided between children, and how you want it
divided. We will be glad to honor these requests. Thank you for your
patience was we work out the "kinks" in our new software.

AR reading is between 7:30 and 8:00. There is usually some time at the end
of the day also. Students are able to go to the library until the first
bell
rings at 7:53 in the morning. The library is closed for check out from
8:00 -
9:30. (This is because all Parsley students are receiving reading
instruction during this time.) I will also try to give them time at the end
of the day to go to the library. Students may check out two library books
at
a time, one of which should always be a chapter book. They need to take an
AR test on both of their books before going to the library.
